Metro-North assures old railroad cars will be removed from Port Jervis

City officials say these forgotten cars have

become a blight

Seven old and vandalized railroad cars, owned by Metro-North and parked on tracks in the City of Port Jervis for about two years, will be removed in the not-too-distance future, the railroad assured yesterday.

One representative of Metro-North told Mayor Gary Lopriore the train cars would be removed last weekend. That did not happen.

Now, Daniel Brucker, a Metro-North spokesman, said the cars will be removed and junked, most likely after they are towed to a scrap yard in Ohio.

The process of getting them out of Port Jervis is a slow one, though, said Brucker. “The very fact that they are paid for by the public, we have to go through a lot of paperwork, a lot of fiscal reviews, to make sure that everything is done, sign, sealed and delivered, with the fact that they are being scrapped, they need to be scrapped, what the devaluation cost is,” he said. “We’re trying to get that done right away.”

Those cars have become a haven for young people to party, drink alcoholic beverages, and use drugs. They are also used by vagrants who live in them.

The railroad cars have been trashed with their interiors torn apart, light bulbs broken and fixtures torn from bathrooms.
