Realism
I see your point, but I think it's overly cynical. Timothy McVeigh and Ted Kaczynski, to name just a couple, are both white Americans who are universally accepted as terrorists. That label is usually attached to people with political motives. They are keeping this guy's motivations under wraps to minimize publicity. I wouldn't say he's being let off the hook. Granted, things are are much more stereotyped post 9/11. Yes, you would have media blowhards and hicks harping about terrorists if the shooter was middle eastern, but most people would consider it exactly what it's being lauded as--a tragic event--regardless of the shooter's race. I still think beefing up security at other showings is stupid.

The whole notion of ''he's white so he gets a pass'' is farcical, how exactly is he getting off? He will spend the rest of his breathing days in a 5x5 cell in the middle of nowhere until he rots, and more than likely he'll be put to death. Neither of those options seem to be a pass to me. As far as it being an act of terrorism, as Real said an act of terror involves a political agenda and the perpetrator carries out an act that will cause fear in hopes that demands are made or a point gets across. This nutjob might of had somekind of twisted manifesto or ''movement'' in his head, but I highly doubt it. Seems to be another case of a fucking lunatic that can't handle life(even though he was set the fuck up, poor little bitch) and took out his angst, frustration and depression on what he saw as ''the world/society.'' Here in VA, in case you were under a rock or have forgotten, the largest death toll in an America school shooting took place in 07, and the culprit was a fucking gook. No one made it about race, terrorism, or any of that silly nonsense. They took it for what it was, a fucking loser with guns taking out his failures on innocent people he knew couldn't fight back. And why for fucks sake would anyone think that a person of Middle Eastern decent planning an attack in a ''White'' country would be an act of terrorism? http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-world/uk-terror-plot-foiled-after-couple-fought-20120720-22di9.html

That's how he was able to just "buck on people" You're telling me you would just blindly bullrush a dude with an assault rifle when you can't see and barely breathe? Not even you're that stupid. So dude in a gas mask and a gun can't be bum rushed and tackled to the ground? It's called fight or flight, if there's nowhere to run and you just cower and allow yourself and whoever you're there with to get shot along with everybody else in the movie theater, then you get what you deserve. Terrorism is the use of fear to coerce a particular reaction. You blow up a bus, send a message of "make abortion illegal or I will blow up another bus". This is terrorism because because you are using the public's fear of blowing up to force a particular policy from the govt - to ban abortion. If it was just a simple act of blowing up a bus to kill people, it's a crime but not an act of terror. Terrorism is the use of fear as a means. There is no universal definition of terrorism. Some say a state cannot be considered a terrorist (look up the Jaccobin courts or 'Stalin's terror'), some say that it has to be specifically a political demand (if the demand is financial then it is extortion, not terrorism according to that argument), or that the attack must be on civilians, not soldiers or police (this argument says that attacks directly on the govt are simply an act of war and that terrorism must create fear and disruption in the public to create pressure on the govt to act in their protection). However there is pretty much universal agreement that terrorism is the use of fear to coerce a particular reaction from your target (the people you hurt are not your actual target, the people who set the policies are your target, you just use the people you hurt to make your target do what you want). Walid Jumblat
And hey, Whilst I'm bombing this thread with shit no one will read, here's whoooooooole pages on domestic terrorism in the US..., you know, people who blow up animal testing labs, abortion clinics and govt offices that are not named Mahmoud and Habib!! Domestic Terrorism Focus on Militia Extremism http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2011/september/militia_092211/ 09/22/11 Seized cache of guns A cache of guns seized from militia extremists Last March, nine members of an extremist militia group were charged in Michigan with seditious conspiracy and attempted use of weapons of mass destruction in connection with an alleged plot to attack law enforcement and spark an uprising against the government. According to the federal indictment, the nine individuals planned to kill a law enforcement officer and then use bombs to attack the caravan of cars taking part in the subsequent funeral procession, hoping that this violence would incite a larger armed conflict with authorities. Fortunately, the FBI and the Michigan State Police intervened and took the subjects into custody before they could carry out their alleged plot. It’s just one example of the dangers posed by so-called militia extremists—the latest topic in our series to educate the nation on domestic terror threats that the FBI investigates today. Previous stories have focused on anarchist extremists, eco-terrorists/animal rights extremists, lone offenders, and sovereign citizen extremists. Who they are. Like many domestic terrorism groups, militia extremists are anti-government. What sets them apart is that they’re often organized into paramilitary groups that follow a military-style rank hierarchy. They tend to stockpile illegal weapons and ammunition, trying illegally to get their hands on fully automatic firearms or attempting to convert weapons to fully automatic. They also try to buy or manufacture improvised explosive devices and typically engage in wilderness, survival, or other paramilitary training. Who and what they target. They usually go after the government itself—including law enforcement personnel, representatives of the courts, and other public officials, along with government buildings. When caught, most militia extremists are charged with weapons, explosives, and/or conspiracy violations. What they believe in. Many militia extremists view themselves as protecting the U.S. Constitution, other U.S. laws, or their own individual liberties. They believe that the Constitution grants citizens the power to take back the federal government by force or violence if they feel it’s necessary. They oppose gun control efforts and fear the widespread disarming of Americans by the federal government. Militia extremists often subscribe to various conspiracy theories regarding government. One of their primary theories is that the United Nations—which they refer to as the New World Order, or NWO—has the right to use its military forces anywhere in the world (it doesn’t, of course). The extremists often train and prepare for what they foresee as an inevitable invasion of the U.S. by United Nations forces. Many militia extremists also wrongly believe that the federal government will relocate citizens to camps controlled by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or force them to undergo vaccinations. One important note: simply espousing anti-government rhetoric is not against the law. However, seeking to advance that ideology through force or violence is illegal, and that’s when the FBI and law enforcement become involved. What is the FBI doing to combat the militia extremism threat? In addition to our lawful use of sophisticated investigative techniques, we’ve expanded our work with other federal agencies such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and with our state and local partners. And we use intelligence and analysis to help identify gaps in our knowledge, emerging tactics and trends, and effective investigative strategies. As always, the combination of intelligence, coordinated law enforcement efforts, and an informed public is the most effective way to counter the threats posed by domestic extremists. Domestic Terrorism The Sovereign Citizen Movement http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2010/april/sovereigncitizens_041310 04/13/10 license_plates.jpg Some examples of illegal license plates used by so-called sovereign citizens. Domestic terrorism—Americans attacking Americans because of U.S.-based extremist ideologies—comes in many forms in our post 9/11 world. To help educate the public, we’ve previously outlined two separate domestic terror threats—eco-terrorists/animal rights extremists and lone offenders. Today, we look at a third threat—the “sovereign citizen” extremist movement. Sovereign citizens are anti-government extremists who believe that even though they physically reside in this country, they are separate or “sovereign” from the United States. As a result, they believe they don’t have to answer to any government authority, including courts, taxing entities, motor vehicle departments, or law enforcement. This causes all kinds of problems—and crimes. For example, many sovereign citizens don’t pay their taxes. They hold illegal courts that issue warrants for judges and police officers. They clog up the court system with frivolous lawsuits and liens against public officials to harass them. And they use fake money orders, personal checks, and the like at government agencies, banks, and businesses. That’s just the beginning. Not every action taken in the name of the sovereign citizen ideology is a crime, but the list of illegal actions committed by these groups, cells, and individuals is extensive (and puts them squarely on our radar). In addition to the above, sovereign citizens: Commit murder and physical assault; Threaten judges, law enforcement professionals, and government personnel; Impersonate police officers and diplomats; Use fake currency, passports, license plates, and driver’s licenses; and Engineer various white-collar scams, including mortgage fraud and so-called “redemption” schemes. Sovereign citizens are often confused with extremists from the militia movement. But while sovereign citizens sometimes use or buy illegal weapons, guns are secondary to their anti-government, anti-tax beliefs. On the other hand, guns and paramilitary training are paramount to militia groups. During the past year, we’ve had a number of investigative successes involving sovereign citizens. A few recent cases: In Sacramento, two sovereign citizens were convicted of running a fraudulent insurance scheme. Operating outside state insurance regulatory guidelines, the men set up their own company and sold “lifetime memberships” to customers, promising to pay any accident claims against their “members.” The company collected millions of dollars, but paid out very few claims. More In Kansas City, three sovereign citizens were convicted of taking part in a conspiracy using phony diplomatic credentials. They charged customers between $450 and $2,000 for a diplomatic identification card, which would bestow upon the holder “sovereign” status—meaning they would enjoy diplomatic immunity from paying taxes and from being stopped or arrested by law enforcement. More In Las Vegas, four men affiliated with the sovereign citizen movement were arrested by the Nevada Joint Terrorism Task Force on federal money laundering, tax evasion, and weapons charges. The investigation involved an undercover operation, with two of the suspects allegedly laundering more than a million dollars from what they believed was a bank fraud scheme. More You can help. First, “be crime smart”—don’t fall for the bogus claims and scams of sovereign citizens. And second, if you have information on any suspicious activities or crimes, please contact us. Putting Intel to Work Against ELF and ALF Terrorists http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2008/june/ecoterror_063008 06/30/08 In early 2006, eco-terrorist Eric McDavid and two associates met in a secluded cabin in Dutch Flat, California to discuss making improvised explosive devices and to choose targets to bomb. Soon after, they began casing the targeted facilities and buying supplies to make bombs. But before they started mixing the ingredients, we swooped in and arrested them. How did we know what McDavid was up to? How were we able to prevent attacks that could have caused thousands or millions of dollars in property damage and possibly harmed people? In a word, intelligence. Our intelligence—which included the use of an FBI source who was actually with McDavid and his associates inside that California cabin—allowed us to piece together the entire plot ahead of time. Since 9/11, we have greatly strengthened our ability to identify, collect, analyze, and share intelligence across all of our national security and criminal priorities. And that has carried over into our investigations of violence and terror committed in the name of the environment—as well as of animal rights. Together, eco-terrorists and animal rights extremists are one of the most serious domestic terrorism threats in the U.S. today…for several good reasons: The sheer volume of their crimes (over 2,000 since 1979); The huge economic impact (losses of more than $110 million since 1979); The wide range of victims (from international corporations to lumber companies to animal testing facilities to genetic research firms); and Their increasingly violent rhetoric and tactics (one recent communiqué sent to a California product testing company said: “You might be able to protect your buildings, but can you protect the homes of every employee?”). ELF and ALF are probably the names you’re most familiar with. The Earth Liberation Front (ELF) and the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) are loosely-organized movements whose adherents engage in crimes like arson, fire bombings, vandalism, intimidation, assaults, stalking, etc. No membership dues are necessary—the only way to become a “member” is to engage in “direct action”…criminal activity designed to cause economic loss or destroy the victim company’s operations. So what are we doing to counter the threat? For one, we’ve mapped our environmental and animal rights extremism cases in order to give our investigators around the country and our executive management a big-picture look at what’s happening and where. We’re also analyzing information from financial records, phone records, and mail…and working to increase our human source reporting. And we’re sharing intelligence with our partners through our Joint Terrorism Task Forces and other investigative endeavors. Sharing info with our partners, particularly at the local level, is crucial because many times they’re the first ones at the crime scene. We’re also taking advantage of the 2006 revision to the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, which toughened penalties, created additional protections for people (the original law only covered property damage), and included secondary targets (often times companies that do business with primary targets are themselves targeted). Our efforts have paid off—since 2005, our investigations have resulted in indictments against 30 individuals. Of course, fully cognizant of the right to free speech, we investigate all animal rights and environmental extremism cases in strict accordance with the law and our guidelines. So whatever happened to Eric McDavid? In May, he was sentenced to nearly 20 years in federal prison. Domestic Terrorism Anarchist Extremism: A Primer Domestic Terrorism Anarchist Extremism: A Primer 11/16/2010 Broken windowTo help educate the public about domestic terrorism—Americans attacking Americans because of U.S.-based extremist ideologies—we’ve previously outlined three separate threats: eco-terrorists/animal rights extremists, lone offenders, and the sovereign citizen movement. Today, we look at a fourth threat—anarchist extremism. What is anarchist extremism? Anarchism is a belief that society should have no government, laws, police, or any other authority. Having that belief is perfectly legal, and the majority of anarchists in the U.S. advocate change through non-violent, non-criminal means. A small minority, however, believes change can only be accomplished through violence and criminal acts…and that, of course, is against the law. Anarchist extremism is nothing new to the FBI. One of our first big cases occurred in 1919, when the Bureau of Investigation (as we were called then) investigated a series of anarchist bombings in several U.S. cities. And during the 1970s, the FBI investigated anarchist extremists such as the Weather Underground Organization, which conducted a series of bombing campaigns. The current threat. Anarchist extremism in the U.S. encompasses a variety of ideologies, including anti-capitalism, anti-globalism, and anti-urbanization. There’s also "green anarchy," an element of anarchist extremism mixed with environmental extremism. The extremists are loosely organized, with no central leadership—although they occasionally demonstrate limited ability to mobilize themselves. Typically, anarchist extremists in the U.S. are event-driven—they show up at political conventions, economic and financial summits, environmental meetings, and the like. They usually target symbols of Western civilization that they perceive to be the root causes of all societal ills—i.e., financial corporations, government institutions, multinational companies, and law enforcement agencies. They damage and vandalize property, riot, set fires, and perpetrate small-scale bombings. Law enforcement is also concerned about anarchist extremists who may be willing to use improvised explosives devices or improvised incendiary devices. Currently, much of the criminal activities of anarchist extremists fall under local jurisdiction, so they’re investigated by local police. If asked by police, the Bureau can assist. But we have a heavy presence at a major national or international events generating significant media coverage—that’s when the threat from anarchist extremists, as well as others who are up to no good, dramatically increases. For today’s generation of American anarchist extremists, the rioting that disrupted the 1999 World Trade Organization meetings in Seattle is the standard by which they measure “success”—it resulted in millions of dollars in property damage and economic loss and injuries to hundreds of law enforcement officers and bystanders. But fortunately, they haven’t been able to duplicate what happened in Seattle…which may be a combination of the improved preparations of law enforcement as well as the disorganization of the movement. This disorganization, though, can also be a challenge for law enforcement: it gives the extremists anonymity and low visibility, and it makes it tough to recruit sources and gather intelligence. It’s challenging, but not impossible—there have been a number of anarchist convictions since 1999 at both the state and federal levels. And the FBI, along with our law enforcement partners, will continue to detect and disrupt enterprises and individuals involved in criminal activity or who advocate the use of force or violence to further an anarchist extremist ideology. 11/16/2010 Broken windowTo help educate the public about domestic terrorism—Americans attacking Americans because of U.S.-based extremist ideologies—we’ve previously outlined three separate threats: eco-terrorists/animal rights extremists, lone offenders, and the sovereign citizen movement. Walid Jumblat
So, PFFFFFT, What I'm suggesting is that you before you form such concrete opinions on complex matters - and then call people out for believing something different - you should probably gain a better understanding of what you are talking about. Unless that cat who shot the cinema up had political demands, we was not carrying out a terrorist attack. The information I have posted above indicates (and the fact that Timothy McVeigh and Ted Kaczinski are household names associated with terrorism) that the USG has no problem in identifying white, US citizens as terrorists and in fact has a long and clear history of doing so. Read more, talk less.

metronome
So dude in a gas mask and a gun can't be bum rushed and tackled to the ground? It's called fight or flight, if there's nowhere to run and you just cower and allow yourself and whoever you're there with to get shot along with everybody else in the movie theater, then you get what you deserve. And it was a fucking smoke bomb not teargas, jackass. Get the facts, bruh. He was posted near the exit and was taking people down as they were trying to flee the theatre, people reacting to their fight or flight instinct. I doubt in the confusion and chaos going on anybody had any time to coordinate a tackle effort against this guy. The same argument can be hand for people who have conceal and carry permits, which are apparently aplenty in Colorado - why didn't anybody in the theatre have one on them? And it was two cannisters of tear gas from all the accounts I've read. Tear gas/smoke bomb, same thing man. It makes your eyes sting and its hard to breathe, what difference would it ultimately make.
