pornbooth
Im tryin to get a site up and I have no clue when it comes to hosting, i know of godaddy but i dont know if they good to go to, im sure there is a better place.. the site im working on will have a blog like or fb wall style main page for vids and random news or what not and a few other pages you can navigate to with text and pics. so its nothing huge like the oontz just small and basic. im sure a few of you have your own websites or have done one, if anyone can help me out with this it would be awesome... GoDaddy is good. Good rates, good service (24/7 phone support). They provide all the major CMS programs for installation like Wordpress and whatnot, for your blogging. Qawee
lol @ godaddy http://twitter.com/#!/jimmy_wales/status/150287579642740736 I was originally going to register a domain with godaddy, due to their support of SOPA I'm going to look elsewhere and would encourage others to do the same. __ __ __ __
Are you coding your own website? If not, do you have the fund to get it done? anywhere from $300-$3,000 ( you get what you pay for). Domains are going to costs you $10 for a year. Meaning you have the rights to that domain name for 12 months. Some hosting services will "give you the domain name" if you sign up for their hosting, but in reality, it is $10 off... They more functionality or "cool" things you want your site to do, the more expensive it will get because of the multiple coding languages. This shit takes many hours of work staring at a screen, so that is why it can run a few G's. I would suggest going with a Tumblr (no hosting fee), Wordpress(20-something $), or similar site that allows you to re-direct a domain name. I use GoDaddy, however if you are not up on how DNS /server IPs work You will hate that shit just to direct it to your account. I heard Bluehost is good, as well as FatCow... both as alternatives to godaddy. lastly, if you are going to use a blog service, make sure you look through their templates, some you might have to pay for, but the design is usually customizable with colors, and adding pages. A homie of mine uses wordpress and he runs a blog that posts music, "street culture" stuff, and videos. http://www.TheKnowbodies.com. You can check it out there. He came to me for a website, but I showed him how to run it off a wordpress. It also gives you a chance to learn a little basic code so when you are ready to have a larger site, you know what is going on. I hope that helps. Peace.

Check out Dreamhost.com. That's what i use. Use wordpress for content management since the interface is about as idiot-proof as it gets. Check out themeforest.com for cheap website ideas. You can usually find torrents for them. I can probably help you with tweaking html/css/php but I've been pretty busy lately.
the.crooked
Whatever you do, do not support GoDaddy. Horrible company with no interest in maintaining an open internet. As far as customer service I will say that HostGator has the best in general. I worked there for a while, stupid company, but they have constantly accessible support, chat, phone, and ticket support system. DreamHost is good too. A lot of hosts also have perks like free script installers, etc. I'd also suggest acquiring your domain name at your host, so that you can have easy access to the DNS records, and the server you are hosting on. Also, be careful of Registrars who do not give you full DNS access. Just a few tips.
pornbooth
Are you coding your own website? If not, do you have the fund to get it done? anywhere from $300-$3,000 ( you get what you pay for). I dont know a whole lot of coding so Im planning to start with a template or if I come across a site that has the set up im looking for I will I will build from that tweaking images, text.... They more functionality or "cool" things you want your site to do, the more expensive it will get because of the multiple coding languages. I dont plan to do anything real fancy basically I want a bio page, contact page, and something like a news feed or blog where I can post videos from my vimeo and to post about current projects, finished projects, and pics. I want the site to be clean but not busy I'd rather have my work make more of an impression than get the viewer overwhelmed by the"coolness" of my site. Thats basically exactly what im looking for in my site. As far as customer service I will say that HostGator has the best in general. I worked there for a while, stupid company, but they have constantly accessible support, chat, phone, and ticket support system. I have definitely checked out hostgator it was open in my browser for about a week, although Mercer's suggestion of bluehost looks pretty good as well. Check out Dreamhost.com. I will. I can probably help you with tweaking html/css/php but I've been pretty busy lately. Thanks, I may have to take you up on it one day. I dont plan to have the site up running for another couple months. So what it sounds like is Im going to have to do is build a blog on wordpress or what not then redirect it to the rest my sites domain host and use it as my front page then have buttons for contact, bio , etc.... Thanks for all the help everybody and suggestions are still welcome
the.crooked
I was just giving the information I knew from when I worked at HG. They aren't great, but there are some perks. I still think DNS control has got to be the most important thing about registering a domain. Jus sayin.
the.crooked
As far as having your blog redirect, what you should do is set it up like this, honestly; maindomainname.com maindomainname.com/blog = your wordpress. wordpress is installed on a given subdomain rather than a separate site which requires you to host them separately and further, redirect them with a-records on the DNS. Just keep it all on one domain on a single host.

Soup
Fail on doing your research on 12oz, all of the companies mentioned so far in this thread are garbage. http://www.bluehost.com/ Forgot blue host even existed. Shit that's cheap. Man I miss the days when companies had free 100 mb sites and that's all you needed.
