Tipping in the US

Aa a foreigner going to the US I never know how much to tip. I found an article through google that said just double the tax is this about right?

 

Can people also give a few words on their personal tipping habbits? Thanks.

your suppose to tip 10% to 15% but depending where i am at, restaurant/casino/salon, its just whatever you feel they deserve. Plenty of times bad service has gotten them nothing. Good service is always very appriciated and shown with a nice tip.

 

I order pizza often, Its always around 25 bucks. I give them thirty for delivering and always being delicious.

15-20% is what they say is customary. I usually do 15%. But if the person was real cool, or if it's an attractive female and she was nice, I leave anywhere from 20-50%.

 

Also if the person was rude, they say you should leave .02... it's to let them know that you didn't forget to tip, but you just thought their service sucked.

i usually tip by doubling the first digit of the bill

 

so if the bill is 20 i would tip 4

 

but thats being generous so if the service is good but not great i usually do double the first digit minus 1

 

so if the bill is 20 i would tip 3

 

if the service sucks i leave a pittance and steal the pen

in my experience the worst tippers are indians (7-11 indian not casino indian)

 

they demand the world of you and youre lucky to get a thank you

Its different for food vs dranks. I always tip a dollar per drink. So if I buy 3 drinks I'm tipping 3 dollars. Even of the total is only 12...

 

Food I'm a solid 20 percent or more tipper. I believe that swamp of also a tipper like me, it's a white guy thing.

as long as the host is personable and making an effort, i drop at least 20%... sometimes a host/hostess will do their part, while the kitchen lags or fucks things up, in which case said host shouldn't be held accountable. if they just flounder service-wise, i'll give them much less than the average 15%

15% - 20% for servers and bartenders, more if they hook you up with free drinks and that usually comes by tipping them well to begin with. Most establishments make servers and bartenders tip out on their total sales, anywhere from 2% - 6%, depending on how many support staff they have; host, food runner, bar porter, doormen, cooks and even management. If you stiff the server by not tipping them, it just cost them money out of their pocket to serve you. Aussies are good at doing this - "oh, struth mate, we don't tip back in Orstralia, fair dinkum, shove it up ya jumback!"
