lil off topic, sorry LUGR.. just to respond..

bojangles, i am so frugal it's really not even a little funny to people

i barely drive (for years i had no car) and i ride a bike to work so i don't pay to park.

i don't really eat out, i shop smart and cook at home.. don't drink, go to bars or movies, or pay for entertainment, i went to tons of live shows and raves when i was younger so i don't care anymore

and i don't buy stuff. i occasionally now make clothes, but we pirate our media and have nice cameras and shit like that so i don't ever buy new things.

i am a ridiculous energy nazi. i don't have AC and i won't turn the heat on for more than 3 months a year. if no one is in a room, the electricity in there must be off.

i live in a kind of crappy hood in the inner city so my mortgage is cheap.

biggest expense last year aside from the house/food was a tattoo. and weed.

i am also crazy about finding travel deals, which is why i'll wanna go somewhere for years but don't, or just suddenly hear of a cool place and next thing i know, i'm going

i've also been lucky to know a lot of foreigners who have let me crash at their homes, though that is far less frequent now that i'm older and have more money

my man and i did so much traveling last year that this year it's been more muted

and now i've been a ton of places so now it's just exotic shit and faraway places: japan, great wall, trans-siberian, buenos aires, patagonia, macchu piccu (sp), istanbul/turkey, back to the middle east, safari, etc.

gotta save a little more for that

i'll also do REALLY short trips, just to do it (3 days in london, another time did prague/dresden in 3 days, went to nassau for 2, etc etc.)

Still on that boat, about to go under 1 of the 2 suspension bridges on the Danube. I believe I was told that they are some of the most used bridges in the world by commuters.

looks like a really rad trip dude. Dubai looks like it's a gigantic abandoned city in florida though. Seems

like no one's in any of the pictures, at the beach, on the highways. just for how nice it looks, and how

many buildings there are, i'd expect more people to be there.

^Dubai did feel pretty empty. Especially when the sun went down and you could see that most of the residential high-rises only had a handful of lights on/tenants. But I also did hear that the month before I was there it was jammed packed with tourists, so maybe it's just a seasonal thing?

Walked around to check out some Turkish street art.

This is the Turkish sticker king, stickers everywhere. It's apparently advertising pest control.

2gb034.jpg

Next day hopped a cab to check out the Grand Bazaar.

2gb007.jpg

Is he buying or selling?

2gb008.jpg

Lots of traffic so I got out and walked the rest of the way.

2gb011.jpg

I really needed this.

2gb009.jpg

The entrance, it "is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with more than 58 covered streets and over 4,000 shops which attract between 250,000 and half a million visitors daily."

2gb032.jpg

Also, the Blue Mosque.

2gb037.jpg

Finally found a cab and took the road by the water.

2gb038.jpg

Had a view of the Galata Tower. Unfortunately, I never made it any closer to the tower.

Chilled until nightfall, and went for a very long walk.

Walking around still, people stay out on the streets pretty late.

2gb050.jpg

Worked up an appetite so checked out the late night food options.

2gb051.jpg

Works for me.

2gb052.jpg

Passed out and woke up with a major hangover and had to catch a flight out. Thankfully I was able to access a lounge at the airport that had a self serve beer tap and a fully stocked bar so I could keep the good times rollin.

2gb054.jpg

Bye Istanbul, hope to see you again sometime.

2gb058.jpg

Back to Dubai International, spent the night at an airport hotel. Everything in this airport is open 24/7...it's awesome.

2gb072.jpg

Flew back to Bahrain from Dubai and waited in traffic.

2gb075.jpg

Heading this way.

2gb076.jpg

More traffic.

2gb081.jpg

These guys were still posted around what used to be the Pearl Roundabout.

2gb083.jpg

2gb084.jpg

What a job.

2gb085.jpg

Lots of American hardware out there.

2gb121.jpg

Also, bought some ground camel meat to make some burgers. They were excellent.

2gb135.jpg

Noticed this while driving....WTF.

2gb126.jpg

This is supposedly the restaurants story?? I'm utterly confused on this one, any Chicago heads know what's up with this?

"Chicago c1988

The Chicago graf scene starting was really taking shape back in 1988. Baggy clothed, hip hop listening crews were bombing up the city with their art everywhere from the north to the south side…they'd get real creative in every aspect of it....what they'd write, how they'd write it, what they'd write it with, how they'd climb up or over whatever it is they'd write it on...got a bit nuts!!

We mostly concentrated along each of the train lines, red, brown, orange, blue... alleys all over, under overpasses, along the expressways, any big wall that’s blank, billboards easily accessible, roof tops... These two graf writers, Staine and Chaos set up their sub sandwich/pizza shop outside Robert Cliemente School where we’d go to lunch, hang out, listen to the hip hop of the time, share drawings in our black covered sketch books with each other.. we’d sit and draw and refine our tags (our nickname in a stylized writing) using markers, shoe polish sometimes, home made ink things.....a deodorant case with some cotton or something in it and a whole mess of ink… We’d work hard on our designs, called ‘throw-ups’ until we could spray ‘em up on the walls… and if we were good enough Chaos invited us to throw something up on the wall of the sandwich shop. They gave us a place to do our thing… in an attempt to legitimize the art form of graffiti, keep us kids off the street and out of trouble…a noble cause and one that is very nobly being kept alive at Graffiti.. kudos to you

--Brian Pazwalt, Class of 1992."

So the next night I was leaving. Ended up going to the airport a few hours early to chill at the Irish Pub in Manama Airport. Nice random group of thirsty people hanging out there. Many soldiers, sailors and contractors there in transit. Finally boarded my flight.

2gb145.jpg

Flew Gulf Air for the first time.

2gb146.jpg

Nice airline except for the carpet and interior of the plane.

2gb147.jpg

Overnight flight, here we go.

2gb151.jpg

Woke up to this.

2gb164.jpg

1 of 2 nuclear power plants we flew over coming into Frankfurt. The nuclear power debate was/is a hot topic with Germans after the Japan crisis.

2gb170.jpg

Landed, hoped in a waiting BMW and rolled out. Was pumped about how green Germany is compared to the desert.

2gb174.jpg

Straight from the airport I drove to the town of Speyer.

After spending hours at the Teknik Museum I drove to another city and headed to this festival in a park.

2gb336.jpg

Sorry for the delay,

A few gliders were cruising overhead. Not really sure how these things took off? But the stayed up there for a long time.

8gb076.jpg

I was really tempted to walk out on this, but decided it was not the smartest idea.

8gb079.jpg

View out one of the windows.

8gb082.jpg

The rental whip. Had never driven a BMW before and loved it. So much fun on the Autobahn, got it up to 124 MPH.

8gb086.jpg

Next day, took the train to a small town for a festival.

8gb094.jpg

Arrived.

8gb098.jpg

Ate some sort of German dough ball.

8gb101.jpg

Did not ride the bull.

8gb102.jpg

Walked around.

8gb103.jpg

Noticed this and had to try it.

8gb107.jpg

Did surprisingly well. Hit the yellow every arrow but one. Bulls eye every time with the crossbow (targets on the left).

8gb111.jpg

Did not ride these either.

8gb117.jpg

Watched this guy roll his dough.

8gb119.jpg

Ate this plate of wild game. Tasted amazing

8gb123.jpg

Fun for all ages.

8gb126.jpg

View from the top of a little museum the town had.

8gb127.jpg

Old folks still know how to have a good time.

8gb131.jpg

Headed back to the car.

8gb132.jpg

Parked on a dirt road in a field.

8gb134.jpg

Next day went to another festival. this band was pretty cool, classic rock and country with a serious German accent.

Passed this. Awesome to see castles/ruins randomly while you are driving.

8gb239.jpg

Couldn't figure out what was in these huts. They were everywhere though. Didn't seem like they were for people?

8gb247.jpg

Oh shit, we're in Austria!

8gb250.jpg

GPS was acting up in Austria so we got a bit lost. But we ended up passing this interesting building.

8gb252.jpg

Finally found the town we were looking for. It is a tiny skii town. Welcome to:
