Gawker effectively conflated the two with people (might as well say "everyone") who had heard of neither one...which would be sort of like saying "Have you heard about this money thing people use at weed clubs? Crazy, man." Bitcoins are an interesting idea but are still very much at the nerdy phase. SR seems like such a bad idea on so many levels but apparently it works...or it did work, who knows. The last thing they needed was publicity.
lord_casek
Stop talking about the damned Silk Road. The deep web is not a place anyone here needs to be on. Too risky. Go buy your weed from locals. Stay away from the USPS. If any of you don't want to heed this warning, it's on you. When you get your door kicked in, maybe you'll remember that I warned you. AlwaysOverDoinn
I agree with casek. It's a stupid and incredibly hot boy move to get your goodies off the net. Newer Bigger Better
The whole point of silk road is that to get to it you have to be on tor, which is an anonymizer. Then you have to use bitcoin, which is anonymous... Then you buy drugs from someone who has a good rating, just like you wouldn't buy nikes from a dude with no rep on ebay... It's worked before. Granted it might definitely be different now, but as far as i heard this site isn't hosted in the US. And there is no way you can block US IPs from reaching it because you're all TOR'd out. lord_casek
Uhhh... it's still interesting to talk about. Talking about it just encourages teenagers to seek out some OG Bubba Kush on the interwebs for $40 Bitcoins an eighth. Besides, deep web isn't a place anyone who doesn't know how to use proxies/vpn's to go. It's filled with child porn and the sick sonsofbitches who look at that shit. Also, LEO's. Not regular happy fun time LEO's, the guys who wear balaclava's when they visit you LEO's.

Newer Bigger Better
br0 it's anonymous as long as you're not a complete fucking retard. The whole reason it was made was for the purpose of anonymous money. Dude got the idea from Cryptonomicon for christs sakes... This is the second idea from neal stephenson that's probably gonna be huge, right after second life. Cmon casek, stop picking lame things to try to argue about. You think I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about and I'm just arguing to argue. That is where you would be wrong, Yeah, based on a book so it's got to be anonymous. The creator says so. lord_casek
Here, buddy. Directly from BTC forums. Quote The possibility to be anonymous or pseudonymous relies on you not revealing any identifying information about yourself in connection with the bitcoin addresses you use Much easier said than done. Most routine e-commerce transactions will link the bitcoin address with other identifying information, and determined attackers can overcome the privacy of even extremely careful bitcoin users: (1) If you don't use Tor, the merchant (or whoever your payment counterparty might be) will have a log or cache entry linking your IP address to your bitcoin address. (2) If you use Tor, but the end-to-end info is unencrypted, the Tor exit node can (and you should assume will) have a log or cache entry linking your bitcoin address, any identifying info you sent to the merchant, and the merchant. (3) If you use Tor, but forget to or can't turn off web cookies, your bitcoin address can be linked to a web cookie, which in turn is often linked to your IP address by an advertising aggregator like Google/Doubleclick. (4) If you order goods shipped to your address, the merchant will have a log or cache entry linking your name, snail-mail address, and any other identifying information you gave, even if you used Tor. (5) Each bitcoin record links your bitcoin address with those of all the counterparties that address has transacted with. Depending on the length and variety of the record it can reveal your shopping pattern which is often uniquely distinguishable from other shopping patterns, just as fingerprints or DNA are unique. (6) Determined investigators or a software system somebody might write (similar to advertiser's software used to track user preferences across merchants) can gather and integrate information from different bitcoin nodes, vendors, etc. the bitcoin user's software has communicated with. Even if one log by itself doesn't tell much information, an aggregation of logs from several different merchants and transactions might speak volumes. (7) etc., there are undoubtedly many other ways to link bitcoin addresses with other identifying information, caused by bitcoin itself, by outside entities the information-gathering and sharing nature of which most users will not be aware, or combinations thereof. Secure anonymity on the Internet is pretty hard to do. Also: This http://blockexplorer.com/address/1N9vKDweKCF9Yibapky7UmqRJ8PKgnvM2s Now, Mr Ego Pants. Are you happy that I blew your "I'm smart because I read on internets article that BTC's are compretery anonymous and you canz haz drugz for dem"? Edit: I feel like I need to add a "GODAMMIT" to this.
