Under the proposed legislation, people could be fined close to $240 for language that is considered indecent or offensive. Attorney-General Robert Clark says the changes mean police will not have to use the courts to deal with people who use bad language. "We're going to be confirming the power of police to issue on-the-spot infringement notices for these sorts of offences, which will free up police resources," he said. "It will also enable them to more effectively act against the sort of loud-mouthed, obnoxious behaviour that can make going out to public places unpleasant for other members of the public." RES4
just seems like a good opportunity for police to abuse their power seeing as whether a word is offensive or not is entirely subjective
lord_casek
I hope you Aussie's fight this. It's bullshit and you guys don't deserve to be policed for speech. Not even if it's hateful in nature.

Mercer
The entire concept of a word being "bad" is retarded, and consequently it causes said word to be used more often. Australians really hate freedoms and routinely pass some of the strictest and most useless laws against themselves.
da1lyoperations
I've seen cops fine people for shit like this before. Offensive language bullshit. Even if the cop says something like "Sit the fuck down dickhead" and you reply with "Fuck this", even if it's not directed at them they try to fine you. They're cunts. Having a law passed though is just ridiculous. My mate got done for calling a cop a pig about 5 years ago. Fuck that. And yeah like RES4 said it is completely subjective. And contextual, if you trip over and yell out "Oh fuck!" are you really gonna get nabbed for that? Seriously.. It'll just give them an excuse to fine people all night on weekends who get a bit rowdy and swear at each other. Something to keep them busy. KM4RT
Fucking shitcunts. But we are so fucking laid-back that people won't protest this or even much worse, stricter laws. In that respect we're giant pussies because we make it easy for governments to fuck us hard.

..romero..
banning words is an unfruitful endeavor. you can't police what everyone says at all times, so this attempt to curb foul language will probably fail and fail hard..the only way i can see it being enforced is if someone were to cuss infront of a police officer. and its just a horrible idea in the first place. it isnt up to any man to tell another what he can and cannot say..the ability to free thought and in turn free speech is paramount in a democratic and free society.. if someones says something that offends some one else thats on them.. if you can't take hearing someone say 'fuck you" than you are weaker than water in my opinion.. get over it. but there is a reason, and a good reason, why free speech isnt (or shouldnt be) infringed upon.. once you start banning things like this its a slippery slope before they start banning each and everyone with a dissenting opinion. this just seems like another attempt to push morals on people while simultaneously collecting some extra revenue for the state. fuck the po' lees and all that good shit.
