They were probably the ones at the best speakeasies, the cool flappers, the dudes who were in touch with the black music scene and watching Little Richard invent rock and roll in tiny bars, the guys smoking weed and driving around in hot rods in the fifties... a hipster is someone who is in touch with whatever interesting scenes are popping up around them, and enjoying it before it gets played out/ too crowded/ watered down/ overly scrutinized by the media/ co-opted for a commercial and a reality show. The people everyone hates, the 20-somethings with tight acid wash jeans jammed into throwback air Jordans and a jaunted trucker hat with their name written out in deco-color over a pair of empty oversize eyeglass frames that belonged to their grandmother in 1983 are just a bunch of herbs that wanted to turn cultural awareness into it's own scene, and by definition will never be cool like the people they emulate. They're the ones who are just doing it to feel like they're cool and part of a scene, so they grow bad 70's moustaches and talk about how everything was cooler before, when only they were into it (when in reality, shit was cool before they caught on, and started to go downhill when they showed up and started blogging about it.) Sadly, the rest of the world likes to be able to paint things in broad strokes, so hipster has just become a blanket term for anyone under thirty that is into cool shit. Fortunately, the media seems to have turned it's attention elsewhere, so as soon as the internet stops crying about it, hipster culture will fade into the same obscurity as wiggers, emos, jocks, greasers, metalheads, sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, and dickheads. 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
