Get the most expensive Mac Pro tower you can. I'm not kidding. Beyond that I'd say the big issue is whether you need portability.

trust me i would and it would probably be good for 10 years but i cant afford it unless i look into loans but not sure if i want to, already got a bunch stacked and stackin at the moment.

im assuming your an amateur on 3d modeling and editing, that being the case the macbook pro would be far better for convenience. unless ur doing high end work or you work for a studio which would usually have its own equipment that extra edge wont be noticeable to you

I figured since you live in a state where there's no sales tax you could come out ahead.

The reason I say go with the tower is because when one thing fouls up on an iMac you have to drag the whole thing down to the nearest Genius Bar. I've had to do that for a friend, and it's a pain in the ass.

So if it's that or the Macbook, I'd go with the Macbook with an SSD and as much memory as you can stuff in there.

If you're truly serious about what you want to do I would save up some more and get a tower with as much power in it as possible. I know 3 people who were in your position about a year ago and 1 went with a MAc Pro tower quad core with 10 gigs of ram and the other two skimped. 1 has already upgraded, the other wishes they could and the dude who made the big purchase said it's the best thing he has done. Saves him a ton of time in rendering, etc. Not to mention once he got a job he was able to work from home sometimes because his box was like the one at his job and he can count on the performance to be at a pro level.

And if you're thinking getting the laptop will be good because you can carry it around and work anywhere, don't bother. A 17 inch Macbook Pro is a pain in the ass to carry around and you basically have to bring an office with you to work somewhere else. A workstation at home is definitely the way to go.

So, if you can't get a big ol' tower, go for the imac.

^my man got his HP awhile after i got my mac.

while i've heard many good things about hp, my mac is going strong (for now) 3 years in, and counting, of pretty heavy use

his laptop is all fucked up, after about 8 months is started switching off and staying off for days at a time. he finally figured out the problem but doesn't have the funds to fix it. so, it's not worth buying a cheaper product if it's just that, a cheaper product. imo.

i love my macbook

my dad calls it a McBook. he's so funny.

anyway now i'm about to buy a desktop.

they are just so powerful. i use one at work, but i def need one at home for video editing, the laptop isn't enough for that kinda shit

so, i guess it depends on what you're planning on using it for

but unless portability is of paramount importance, get a desktop or tower.

HEY MY FORD FIESTA ALSO HAS FOUR TIRES, A CEILING, A BATTERY, ECT.

SO WHY WOULD ANYONE BUY A FUCKING BENTLEY

THESE MOTHERFUCKERS LOVE WASTING MONEY

MY BITCH ALSO GOT TWO TITTIES,

WHY WOULD I WANT TO FUCK JESSICA ALBA, SHE GOT 2 TITTIES ALSO?

i know how macs became trendy and understand how this can annoy you but in the video field these machines have become the standard the reason said is because their powers are far more superior in the opinions of professionals so the extra money spent is well worth it.

if you gonna sit at a coffee shop with your laptop and only use it for gossiping on facebook and typing up papers for class buy a pc, as said for video editing then a mac...

For any sort of serious editing, you're going to want a tower and will most certainly be frustrated if you get a laptop.

I have a macbook pro, and a few years ago when I was doing some minor film work, shit was frustrating to no end compared to working on a tower. Granted, there are some other factors to keep in mind, but if the main purpose of the computer is editing: get a tower. Laptops are ideal for people like me who like to sit on the couch on the computer, travel with it a fair bit, and generally don't get much more intense than running photoshop and lightroom to edit some photos. IE: it's main purpose isn't serious video editing, but it certainly can be used for it if it comes down to it and is perfectly adequate for photo editing.

Get the tower, pump it full of more power when you have the money. Or, if you have some time to spare, save up for a few more months and get a better tower. The initial investment sucks, but nothing sucks more than making a big purchase and then wishing it had been the slightly bigger purchase for the next few years while you wait to be able to buy something better.

I don't know that much about about video editing but I don't think i would be giving you bad advice in telling you to hold out, stack some more bread and go for processing power. Swap out the onboard graphics hookup. None of this is cheap but I expect it to be worth the while. Nothing wrong with having a powerful GPU at any rate. I've heard of people delegating GPU cycles to other things beyond graphics. Im not sure what i would do if i was you. I like my Imac. Nice big screen and a friendly interface. Mac book Pro is nice too. You could always buy a separate monitor keyboard and mouse for when you are trying to be spread out at home. I've played with the Power Mac. My needs currently don't support me spending that kind of money.
