seeking 292 Posted October 26, 2010 I wanna get one of these for my dad. As an apple person, I don't know shit about pc stuff. Anyone got any advice on brands to look for or stay away from? Thanks

Spitfire15 585 Posted October 26, 2010 Yep, Asus makes great netbooks.
earl broclo ESQ 943 Posted October 26, 2010 My girlfriend has an Asus netbook. She only uses it for internet and I-tunes so she can put music on her I-pod. I call it "The Chiclet." Like I said, she only uses it for internet and music, so I'm not exactly sure how they are for anything else. She seems to be really happy with it though. seeking 292 Posted October 26, 2010 What about acer?
Realism 836 Posted October 26, 2010 I might be really exposing my technological ignorance here, but I wasn't aware people used these little things for anything else besides surfing the web brah and music...maybe to store spreadsheets or some shit for the business types... KILZ FILLZ 2,306 Posted October 26, 2010 Didn't know people really used em.
earl broclo ESQ 943 Posted October 26, 2010 Sorry. I was wrong. She has a Samsung netbook. It looks just like that photo above though. What's your dad going to be using it for?
Violent Gangbanger 24 Posted October 26, 2010 Don't get an Acer, I only know these things because I worked for a store selling them, but get the one with the best battery life, but not Acer. Asus, really. They're all essentially the same.
Tuco Salamanca 67 Posted October 26, 2010 I use Asus netbooks in my language class, and the damn thing has a battery life of 30 minutes without the charger being plugged in. It might just be the computers we're using, but in my opinion these aren't very good in terms of battery life. In term of speed, however, they are pretty decent. Telo 37 Posted October 26, 2010 Most likely because they keep them plugged in all the time. Thats not healthy for a laptop or any other electronic for that matter.
sneekatoke 48 Posted October 26, 2010 had an acer, was ok. All pc's come loaded with bullshit, so once you clean it out it works fine. acer also has a larger optional battery pack i believe (its one of the cheapest brands) HP netbooks are pretty good, but more expensive. really, how much is your dad going to do with it? because an acer should work for general purposes just fine... SystemFailure 548 Posted October 26, 2010 Asus really is where it's at. But get a macbook and really start LIVING

earl broclo ESQ 943 Posted October 26, 2010 I don't think he's trying to spend macbook money on the gift. Seeks --if your pops is just using it for the web, the Samsung one my girl has was pretty cheap and does the trick. She cleaned off all the bullshit she didn't need, and I've never seen her have any issues. The battery life is really good as well, much much better than my macbook. I think she only payed like 3 or 4 bills for it. Here's the info: http://www.samsung.com/hk_en/consumer/computer-peripherals/notebook/others/NP-N210-JA02HK/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail Here's some reviews: http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/samsung-np-n210-ja02us/4505-3121_7-33970183.html
abcs 384 Posted October 26, 2010 i hate it when people qualify themselves as apple people but anyways. What i did was pick up a Dell Latitude D410. I put an extended life battery on and added a GB of system memory. Its a small laptop and only came with 40 GB hard drive so i picked up an external HD that holds 320. I got the comp for free but ive seen the same one on ebay and craigslist for 100$. The added memory was not necessary but I wanted a bit more performance. The external hard drive was necessary. All together its probably 250$ and i wouldn't trade it for a new netbook in a million years
earl broclo ESQ 943 Posted October 26, 2010 I hate when pear shaped people say they're apple people. I also hate ear plugs.

shai 710 Posted October 26, 2010 My friend just picked this up for a little over 200....IMO it's pretty good, decent battery life and the keyboard doesn't feel too cramped. I would stick with ASUS.

seeking 292 Posted October 26, 2010 He and my step mom are going camping across Mexico for 4 months, living out of their van (no hippie). He just needs something simple to watch DVDs on, get on the Internet and I think my step mom might need to run excel for some simple work-from-the-road shit. They don't need anything fancy or expensive at all. To be perfectly honest, I think my dad just doesn't want to be away from his online poker. Ima skate up to best buy in a few and see what they have to say.
Spitfire15 585 Posted October 26, 2010 Hm, Im sure they do netbooks with CD/DVD drives but mine sure does not.
Qawee 175 Posted October 26, 2010 yeah generally they don't have cd/dvd drives you can still buy cheap laptops with cd/dvd drives for $3-400 they pretty much suck as far as computing power but if its just online poker and dvd watching they'll work
abcs 384 Posted October 26, 2010 my Dell. The one i described above has a dock that it sits in with a dvd drive and other shit. Im not sure i would want my mom camping out a van in mexico for 4 months. If the gangs are really out there kidnapping migrants from south mexico and latin america hopping trains to get to america (people with little to nothing).... they see your folks and you can expect a phone call and ransom
