Stop Internet Censorship: COICA/SOPA et al

JOIN The VICE MAGAZINE SOPA SPONSOR HYPOCRITE HUNT

Cast your mind back, way back, to this morning. We found out that the guy whose idea it was to kill the internet with the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) had used an unauthorized photograph to tart up his own website. Remember? Lamar Smith wants to stop people on the internet from violating copyright law, but, in the process of promoting his career as an internet-killing politician, he violated copyright law himself. Clearly, that makes him a hypocrite. (A hypocrite whose website was "down for maintenance" shortly after this post was published, but appears to be up again now.)

Well, this afternoon we started attempting to gather information of similar copyright infringements by other co-sponsors/supporters of the bill. There's a ton of stuff on these people's sites which, we assume, is copyright protected and not cleared. Take the above video for example. It was uploaded to the official YouTube channel of Lee Terry, the Nebraska representative who was one of the original 12 SOPA co-sponsors. It's hard to imagine that he would have spent the tens of thousands of dollars it would have cost to clear the clips of Looney Tunes, C-Span, ABC News, and FOX News that are used in it. Especially seeing as, at the time of writing, the video has only been viewed 115 times.

The list of co-sponsors has swollen to 81 since the bill was launched, so we're turning it over to you. If you're bored tonight, see if you can find any examples of copyright violation by any of the 81 co-sponsors (the full list of which can be seen here) and send your screengrabs or links to me, at jamie.taete@vice.com – I'll be updating this blog with anything you find.

yes, that's true

but most average americans would rather stay on the couch than cast a vote

then you hear the tired old excuse ad nauseum, 'there is no one to vote for'

and i never see these people running a campaign either

the only good thing about our system is that it can be changed from the inside

and let's face it, our military is far too powerful for any revolution to happen here.

people actually do just need to vote at the least, run for office at most

shits all just a buncha bullshit. only leading up to one inevitable, unstoppable thing....

this is why i'm spending the year reading up and preparing for a more KIR

style of living. even if i don't last. i'm fucking tired of all this shit. wake up, go

to work. go home. drink a beer. watch a vhs, walk the dog, maybe do something

else. check bank acct. pay a fucking bill. get a paycheck. spend it on overpriced rent.

read somethin, go to bed. BEEEP BEEEP BEEEP fucking alarm goes off.

drive a car to work cause public trans is more expensive. work for shitty jews

who do nothing and make quadruple my pay. fuck. you. america.

ps. symbols. i'm not anything close to politically in the know.

but i gotta fucking disagree 110% on the voting thing.

i voted a single time in my life. for mr. current president

not just because im fucking black and wanted to see it happen.

but because he talked all this shit about doing something in particular

that he never fucking mentioned again. i'm convinced that voting does

absolutely nothing but keep more and more control over shit like, the internet.

Call Harry Reid: (202) 224-3542

if you want to opt out of democracy, fine by me

but don't be upset when you wake up to a very different USA

i plan to emigrate eventually and i don't have kids so i'm not as invested in the future as some

voting got me plenty of stuff, not least of which was the HOPE scholarship and the Lifetime Learning Credit. ($$$)

it also got me the FMLA. it's not like none of my peeps do shit for me. i have a good relationship with my reps and they listen when i tell them gay marriage should be legal, for example.

you notice how we once had jim crow laws, and now we are fighting for equality for all?

how exactly do you think we got here? by not voting or doing a damn thing? :haha:

i'm cynical, but i also realize that most people aren't engaged because they are lazy.

fuck it, i honestly don't care, if you care. it's all guts.

symbols. clearly obviously you're a smart, extra educated type of broad.

but you can't honestly believe "YOUR" vote or "OUR" vote is going to make

a damn bit of difference the way things have been going in this country.

i tried getting into the occupy movement and gave up shortly after because

i realized that until people stop talking and start getting physical

this shits only going to get worse. until that point......crookedasscountry is

KROOKED. the end. call it what you will, but i honestly feel my vote these days

isn't going to make a god damned bit of difference. there isn't even

a candidate worth a shit as far as i can tell now regardless.

"The Bass Tab Archive tab collection has been taken off-line in order to comply with a recently received takedown letter from legal representation for the NMPA and MPA. While I strongly disagree with their position that on-line guitar tablature is a violation of artist copyright, I have chosen to comply with this order. As there is a growing community of tablature sites being threatened in this manner, my hope is that some coordinated effort can be made to resolve this matter."

different or not it's really bothering the shit out of me.

the tabs and transcriptions of artists songs have nothing to do with piracy,

fucking clowns.

i completely understand your feelings, i used to feel that way.

my beef with occupy is that there is no central tenet

i do still think though, that if 'we' can get corporations out of government, there is a chance for 'us'

i guess what also happened as i got older, is that i saw a LOT of the rest of the world.

complain as much as i do, things actually are not as bad as they could be.

i got some faith restored when a black guy got elected president.

showed me elections probably are not exactly rigged, all the time.

it brought a lot of shit to the surface, yes.. and it also stoked the fire of the tea party movement.. but look at those douchebags for example, they are actually having an impact. they are changing the course of govt.. even Ronnie Paul has a larger following now..

our system does allow for change, and for as long as people like you just check out of the system, things will get worse.

it makes me think though, that we are seriously fucked, because people like yourself are leaving it to old white people and the tea party to remake our country.. it's sad.

but if keystoneXL can be shot down (at least for now..) things can still break good.

if you hate all the candidates in your area (i have two awesome, and awesomely left-wing, state senators) ..consider going into politics then. fuck it.

.........

seriously folks, not trying to go all crossfire here

but if these stupid anti-piracy laws go down, shit like oontz won't exist.

we post copyrighted articles, photos, music, and links to all that shit all the time.

and if you look at what happened yesterday, it's obvious that the 'will of the people' still means something (even if it's not much)
