Production on a second sequel, titled Mortal Kombat: Devastation, was initially scheduled to commence shortly after the release of Annihilation, but it was shelved due to Annihilation's poor box-office performance. It consequently has remained stagnant in preproduction for over a decade, including being mired in development hell for a number of years with numerous script rewrites and story changes, along with the destruction of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina, which greatly affected one of the shooting locations.[10] In June 2009, a bankruptcy court lawsuit saw Lawrence Kasanoff suing Midway, mentioning that a third film was in the works. Warner Bros. (which became the parent of New Line in 2008, after over a decade of both operating as separate divisions of Time Warner) ended up purchasing most of Midway's assets, including Mortal Kombat, the next month.[11]

Actor Chris Casamassa reported in July 2009 that he was reprising his role as Scorpion and claimed that filming would begin in September of the same year,[12] while Linden Ashby (Johnny Cage in the first film) said on Soap Talk that he read the script and planned on returning to the role.[13] However, the film still has yet to officially go into production, and no information about the project exists on the official MK website produced by Threshold Entertainment, which has not been updated since 2004.[14] Bloody Disgusting reported in January 2010 that Warner Bros. had hired Oren Uziel to write a new script of the reboot.[15] Paul W.S. Anderson, who had directed the original, expressed interest in returning to the franchise in a May 4 interview with G4, though he is not currently under consideration to do so.[16]

A trailer for a new film appeared on the internet in June, 2010, featuring Michael Jai White as Jax, Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade and Ian Anthony Dale as Scorpion. It also featured Reptile, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage and Baraka. Sources speculate that the trailer could indicate a reboot movie or a tie in for the next Mortal Kombat game. [17]

I don't know why they didn't attempt this in the first place -- follow the storyline & plot of the game. Street Fighter with Van Damme had almost nothing to do with the game. And the other Mortal Kombats didn't follow the games either.

It seems this MK movie and Street Fighter Legacy are attempting to do that.

ya if my memory serves correct those street fighter van damms, and mortal kombats were pretty kid oriented. with the mortal kombats being slightly better. but for obvious reasons, they were obviously a huge part of the video game momentum from there time.

thats when "gaming" really started to catch wind. and again, at that time, video games were for kids.

now, the beauty of this movie is not only have the generation that was glued to SF/MK grown up into adulthood. but video games are played by virtually every demographic to some degree.

this movie will capitolize on multiple levels. im hyped.

I remember the controversy surrounding this game when it first came to nes and sega consoles. News channel doing big do not buy your kids this game segment. Tried to ban it and everything, I even think it became the first game you had to be 18 to buy.

Shit was pretty violent, got mma fighter ripping each other hearts out.
