MrChupacabra
Out of curiosity, these threads pop up from time to time. What exactly is it that people have against therapy? Why is it that the risks associated w/ meds outweighs whatever negatives one would face with therapy? A lot of the responses in these threads seem to indicate that people were generally unhappy w/ meds or that it didn't work for them. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking meds, especially for things like Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia, but I think other things could be better solved with therapy over time. Fact of the matter is, 99% of the people who post in these threads have no idea what they are talking about. Most of them just know a friend of a friend of a second cousin who was on meds and they didn't work, or for a large chunk of the people who have been on meds, they weren't smart enough to go do a shit ton of research on their own time, or they just thought meds were going to solve their issues and didn't put any effort into doing therapy or working on their issues while they were on the meds. Then they go off the meds and get mad that they went right back to where they were. It basically just boils down to people not being educated enough on medications, and the fact that they aren't some end all be all solution like people love to assume. People also need to realize there is no miracle med. What works great at leveling someone out so they can work on their problems might be terrible for someone else, which is exactly why people need to spend some of their own time doing serious reading and research and not assume that just because their Doc prescribed something that it is going to work. If you aren't fully aware of all of the possible side effects, the telltale signs, etc, then you shouldn't be fucking with meds. If you aren't willing to go see a psych or a therapist, you shouldn't be fucking with meds. If you don't plan on bettering your life (be it quitting/slowing up on drinking/drugs, changing your daily lifestyle, and generally working on your issues if/when the meds help level you out) you shouldn't be fucking with meds. NightmareOnElmStreet
there is absolutley nothing wrong with therapy. it's what therapy generally leads to that i'm against. that is of course unless you state at the beginning of your sessions specifically, that your not going to start popping on the meds. therapy can help, probably more so than most people even think...especially if your therapist is a hot grad...or say this chick...not the geezer. MrChupacabra
If you're comfortable talking with your therapist, who the fuck cares if it's a 95 year old man or a hot 23 year old recent grad. The whole point is to find someone you're fully comfortable being honest with because if you're bullshitting to them, then you're entirely missing the point. This isn't a porno; you're not going to fuck your psych.
twinky the kid
yeah man i know that, i was just throwin some humor in. i was actually super happy with my first session, and definitely looking forward to the next.
MrChupacabra
It was in response to Nightmare saying to bail and ask for a female. If you're looking forward to seeing your therapist, you're taking a big step in the right direction. If money isn't a huge issue/you have insurance, consider seeing your therapist more than once a month for a little while, if you feel like it would help you out. Especially since you're starting on meds for what i'm assuming is the first time ever.
john_gacy
Weekly or biweekly is generally the way to start. Also, the type of therapy can make a difference too, although connection is key. NOES, were you calling me a dick, or is that your frustration toward therapists?
