A mexican is now officially the richest man in the world.

The Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helú has taken the top spot in the Forbes annual rankings of the richest billionaires in the world, pushing aside the two perennial leaders, Bill Gates and Warren E. Buffett, even though all three men added greatly to their wealth last year.

Forbes estimated that Mr. Slim was worth $53.5 billion, a gain of $18.5 billion. Mr. Slim narrowly edged out Mr. Gates, previously the richest man in the world, but Mr. Gates still saw his wealth increase by $13 billion, to $53 billion, as Microsoft’s shares rose about 50 percent, according to Forbes. Mr. Buffett, meanwhile, saw his fortune rise $10 billion, to $47 billion, as Berkshire Hathaway rebounded from the financial crisis.

Mr. Slim, a self-made tycoon like Mr. Gates and Mr. Buffett, derives much of his fortune from his telecommunications businesses, including the big wireless operator América Móvil. He also controls a large construction business, Impulsora del Desarrollo y el Empleo, and owns significant stakes in a number of companies including Saks and The New York Times Company.

Two billionaires from India came in fourth and fifth spots on the Forbes list. Mukesh Ambani, who controls Reliance Industries, a petrochemicals, oil and gas business, was estimated to be worth $29 billion, while Lakshmi Mittal, who controls the giant steelmaker ArcelorMittal and now lives in Britian, was worth $28.7 billion. Both men started out with inherited wealth.

Among Wall Street notables, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York came in 23rd, with $18 billion; the financier George Soros was 35th, with $14 billion; the hedge fund manager John Paulson was 45th, with $12 billion; the financier Ronald O. Perelman was 52nd, with $11 billion, and the activist shareholder Carl C. Icahn was 59th, with $10.5 billion.

Speaking of Mr. Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway disclosed in its annual proxy statement sent to shareholders that it spent nearly $29,000 more last to provide him with personal and home security, bringing the total security cost to $344,490, according to The Associated Press. There were no indications of threats against Mr. Buffett, so this increase could represent just raises and overtime or the hiring of an added part-time guard.

Over all, Berkshire said Mr. Buffett received $519,490 total compensation in 2009, an increase of 6 percent, mainly because of the added security cost. His salary remained unchanged at $100,000, the same amount he has been paid for 25 years, The A.P. notes. Until other Wall Street titans, Mr. Buffett received no bonus. But he still has that $47 billion.
