earl broclo ESQ
I'm not too familiar with this band, but thought I'd drop them here. The Nuyorican Soul (Masters At Work) album is probably more house than acid jazz, but they could easily fit into an acid jazz mix. EBN (Emergency Broadcast Network) was this multi-media act from the 90's. I love how they sample though. The shit is hilarious. I guess I'd put them in with "trip hop" because that's where everyone put DJ Shadow and EBN was always lumped in with that style.
`Melinoe
I love Masters at Work. Especially their more housey type stuff. Nuyorican soul pushes onto house levels but I think for the most part they're still considered acid jazz. That EBN is nice, too. Mondo Grosso: Big in Japan but still well known in the West for Acid Jazz. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9NrCsEYKdQ&feature=related I really suggest Monday Michiru Also...again. (HER OLD STUFF) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K77dtFgFmaM&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iR8fsetYQLY&feature=related And Swing Out Sister of course. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IULZ-S9FzlA&feature=related
|O__________o|-robojones
acid jazz is a genre i know nothing about.. but the fact that you have mmw in there has me all ocd with my jazz and funk music folders now.
`Melinoe
Well the thing is, Funk has a really distinct sound most of the time. Acid Jazz kind of confuses people because it sounds like funk but it can be softer and have a stronger jazz element to it. Acid Jazz is a confusing genre, lol. earl broclo ESQ
acid jazz is a genre i know nothing about.. but the fact that you have mmw in there has me all ocd with my jazz and funk music folders now. I put MMW in there for more of a trip hop feel, not acid jazz. I know MMW is jazz act, but when I first heard them I was lumping them in with all the mo' wax shit of the mid/late 90's. I'm also posting stuff that I'm not sure what genre it belongs to, but would mix well with the genre's this thread is about.
earl broclo ESQ
i just linked it to the only genre of music i dont like ... smooth jazz.. Yeah, smooth jazz isn't really my thing and some acid jazz tends to get a little watered down and smoothy. Mellinoe mentione Roy Ayers as a pioneer of acid jazz, but I always thought people like George Benson and Grover Washington Jr. were more like acid jazz. George Benson - Breezin' George Benson - Affirmation Grover Washington, Jr. - Mister Magic Roy Ayers definitely fits in the whole thing, and I won't argue that, I just think whenever I hear acid jazz, I think of the stuff above over Ubiquity. compton red
^^^ ha, i was just going to respond saying that i think i'm one of the few people under age 55 that enjoys some smooth yazz every now and again. and earl linked to george benson on the last page, who is one of the dudes i enjoy. i never thought of him as acid jazz, maybe b/c smooth jazz radio stations bump his work, especially "breezin". shit's good to me either way. earl broclo ESQ
I have nothing against George Benson. There were some good remixes in the late 90's.

Manute Bol
I was all over this thread yesterday and talkin' about how April wine's "I'm on fire for you baby" is a sure panty dropper when my boss looked at me and said "You're an old soul, Manute..." GOOD MUSIC FTW.

`Melinoe
I tend to think Nujabes is more Hiphop than acid jazz or trip hop. I dunno that's just my opinion. @Earl I usually Think of Grover Washington mostly as smooth jazz, probably because i'm so used to hearing him on our smooth jazz stations. They wear him out. Most smooth jazz begins to sound the same after a while I detest it.
earl broclo ESQ
The Hotel Costes series are pretty consistent. Samples: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMTRPH0uSR4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZNLHrLOEDg
earl broclo ESQ
Most smooth jazz begins to sound the same after a while I detest it. In a way, that's how I was starting to feel with acid jazz by the end of the 90's. I've lost touch though, so maybe it bounced back, but everything just started sounding the way of smooth jazz. I'm talking about the bands though, not the producers. The producers always balanced it out with a house beat or a break beat. Some of the bands just turned into a Smooth Grooves session. That's why I always think of that Grover Benson Jr. sound over Roy Ayers or Lonnie Liston Smith.
`Melinoe
No a lot of notorious acid jazz bands did start to blend or change after a while which is unfortunate. I think for some of them it was because of the labels they were on. Can this also be considered a nu jazz thread? Or is that pushing it? IOU
Acid Jazz is dead, end of story. Nu Jazz is a lot better and more credible than Acid Jazz could have ever been. It's like cats got to see what went wrong with Acid Jazz.
earl broclo ESQ
So what is Nu-Jazz?
`Melinoe
Prettymuch Acid Jazz but with more electronic elements.
earl broclo ESQ
So Nu-Jazz is deep house? haha
earl broclo ESQ
I also want to throw out one of the major influences (in my opinion) on acid jazz/house/ and I guess Nu-Jazz. Candido. Candido - Jingo 12'' (1979) Good live band music died in the 70's and got recycled as early as the mid 90's. It's all still being recycled. detroit red
i just linked it to the only genre of music i dont like ... smooth jazz.. this is soooo true. growing up...my pops listened to tons of jazz, blues and reggae....where my mom listened to more contemporary shit at the time, like david bowie, sade, the police/sting...and horrible fucking smooth jazz. but every now and then.. a track would be played on the local smooth jazz station and i couldnt help but like some of it because they also played shit like swing out sister and incognito(which my mom loves). but yeah... me and my pops always use to make fun of smooth jazz. compton red
have you guys heard of the mushroom jazz series? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushroom_Jazz I have 1-5, they're pretty solid. youtube is kind of sparse on samples from the series, but the two i mentioned on the first post in this thread come from that. People Under The Stairs - Schooled In The Trade DJ Mark Farina - Piano Grand also this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fcl88sWfvLU
`Melinoe
It's kind of like deep house except more mellowed out most of the time. A good artist is Jazzanova. Perfect example of nu jazz.
