Max Headroom Pirating Incident

Realism

Recommended Posts

In 1987, Chicago TV channels WGN9 and WTTW-11 were hijacked by an unknown party wearing a Max Headroom mask. More than 20 years later, they are still at large. This is a subtitled version of the original footage added as a courtesy due to the low audio quality of the recording.

Okay, this weird as fuck. Pretty interesting as well, but there is next to no information about it. So just watch it if you like.

I searched and couldn't find anything except a minor reference to it in a thread which archived a bunch of stuff that happened in '86-'87.

Yep, I also vividly remember when that happened. I didn't see it but my mum and my sister did, I was so pissed off that I missed it as I was a big Max H. fan and when this happened I thought it was some kind of youth revolution that I was missing out on.

This is, however, the first time I've actually seen the footage of what happened! So, props on that!

essentially this is video hacking at it's finest. this type of stuff hasn't been done much, and most of the time it's set up to look like an accident i.e. the superbowl porn incident. i've been looking into applicable methods of performing this, but unless you work at the cable company itself, it looks like there's little to no routes of doing this. back in the 80s/90s, i think it's totally viable to perform this without issue, but since cable has stepped up to digital signals, it's damn near impossible.

awesome as fuck though, i had posted a this in the pirate radio thread that died quickly (i think). either way, UHF frequencies are still kinda open, though you won't get much/any viewership since nobody sits around in UHF channels waiting for some jerk pirate to broadcast a stupid movie that'll get em 10 years.

cool

whos max headroom?

He was a character on a sci fi show that aired in the 80s. It was one of those Orwellian type things I think, all about how in the future television controls everything...sort of like 1984 meets Network, perhaps? I've never actually seen it, I believe it was short lived and I wasn't exactly watching TV when it aired.
