pornbooth
perhaps one of you can explain to me why buying a train ticket to anywhere is so goddamn expensive? for instance: the cheapest ticket from philly to ny by train is like 45? some cost 100+ Riding some sleeper train across the country sounds AMAZING, but I can't even imagine how much it would cost. i paid $385

Ferris Bueller
You paid $385 for a sleeper one-way? Each time I looked up a sleeper, they were crazy expensive (I took Amtrak from MSP to Springfield, MA) and my round trip fare costed about that much for coach.
Sleazeside Heights
Can't wait to do this across the country, I just need some more loot. booze is expensive as mentioned , but how much is it for juices/sodas? I can just brink a big bottle of vodka with me correct? psyched to see freights and underpasses. Definitely bringing lots of batteries for the camera. You guys posted some majestic ones in here. looks fantastic.
Ferris Bueller
Hell yeah, you can bring booze on board. I paid like $4-5 a Heineken when I was on my trip. Then I drank a ton while on layover in a Union Station bar.

IOU
Can't wait to do another Amtrak trip somewhere. Not sure if I could take a real long distance trip, but I'd be willing to try. You shouldn't need to bring a bunch of batteries though for your camera. I remember being able to recharge mine right where I sat. I also think that someone mentioned before that you get a regular old ticket and then upgrade when you get on the train and that might be cheaper. Not sure though. Got this in a recent email: http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer/AM_Content_C/1246042876232/1237405732514&WT.mc_t=%20LDReminderWinterA_01-2010EM&WT.mc_n=LDWinterASalePromoPageLink&WT.mc_r=14?convertCT=3119581
T.T Boy
i did that same empire builder trip. just not as far. ive yet to take passenger rail in my own country. mine was super cheap. google discount codes and buy tickets online. i met a lot of army personnel on my trip, i guess they get heavily subsidized travel on amtrak? i reckon amtrak would be very easy to hop. the employees are easily the most unhappy of any worker. train is king. fuck a plane. yonis
apparently if you're alone and you have your own room on a long trip they let the feds know. every transaction by amtrak is sent to government telling them how much and how you pay, your name, where your going etc. i was going to come back by train from cali to nyc in the summer but it kinda bugged me out
thecarwreck
I've done the Empire Builder twice... Philly>Seattle and back 2 years ago and then Syracuse>Seattle this past summer... it's like a vacation before a vacation. Montana is huge. Not going to jack your thread, but here's some summertime shots (winter might win, though): 2206 miles.
thecarwreck
probably doing chi>denver in april... california zephyr. if i'm never on a plane again, it'll be too soon.
thecarwreck
oh, and price-wise... it'll set you back some if you get a sleeper, but that price includes 3 meals a day for 2.5 days and a bunch of amenities. my wife and i got hooked up with hot cookies, champagne, and wine "tastings" (a bottle each)... food & drink alone will set you back a good chunk if you go coach. plus, once you hit a major hub (chi for the empire), you get access to the swanky lounge and free bag check. fuck a plane.
