I went to Saipan in 2001 & 2002 and they still have the Japanese tanks and fortifications there along the beaches. And all the caves you can go in to which the Japanese used for shelter. Black and white is just sort of a universal film archetype for "back then" which may as well be 1900. You can actually see the blood and guts, the expressions on peoples faces stand out more, and they remind you of people that you would actually know as opposed to some abstract black and white (back in the day) people.
