El triunfo mexicano fue total, ya que obligó a los franceses a replegarse. Zaragoza, quien muy joven combatió contra la invasión norteamericana y después se distinguió en la Guerra de Reforma, como miembro del ejército liberal, supo aprovechar la disposición de los fuertes de Loreto y Guadalupe, que defendían la ciudad de Puebla. En esta batalla se destacó la participación del contingente de indígenas zacapoaxtlas entre las tropas mexicanas. La batalla de Puebla fue un logro inmenso para México desde el punto de vista estratégico, porque retrasó un año el avance del invasor y permitió al gobierno mexicano preparar más a fondo la defensa. Pero más importante fue el impacto moral de este triunfo: el pueblo vio que el extranjero no era invencible y que las fuerzas mexicanas fueron capaces de hacer frente al ejército más poderoso del mundo.
