Baby assaulted in Gilbert Park area

WINNIPEG — An 18-year-old man is being credited with saving the life of a baby whose head was being smashed into a sidewalk early this morning.

Tyler Bilsborrow said between 4 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. Tuesday he stepped outside his Gilbert Park home to smoke a cigarette and heard whimpering noises.

He noticed a woman sitting on a sidewalk near Chudley Street and Tyndall Avenue hitting something against the sidewalk. He realized with horror it was a child.

"I thought the woman was drunk, beating up a cat," recalled Bilsborrow, standing less than 100 metres from where the incident took place. "(The child) was screaming, crying, trying to breathe."

As he walked toward them, the crying woman dropped the child and ran off. The baby lay on its stomach and feebly tried to crawl, he said.

Bilsborrow, father of a two-year-old daughter, used his sweatshirt to wrap around the beaten child. He used a cell phone to alert police and rubbed the child’s stomach to calm it down, he said.

Police said Tuesday morning the child was in guarded condition at hospital.

Bilsborrow said he believed the child was a girl about six or seven months old. He said the woman had gripped the child’s body by its neck, with its face turned away from her, as she rapped its head against the sidewalk.

"Nobody in their straight mind could do that to a kid," he said. "(The police) said ‘You pretty much saved its life.’"

Bilsborrow said the woman was in her 20s, wearing jeans and a short-sleeved shirt.

He described extensive injuries to the child, who was clothed in a muscle shirt covered in blood and a diaper.

Police said Tuesday morning officers were interviewing people in connection with the case but could not confirm anyone had been taken into custody.

Bilsborrow said he was at the Public Safety Building for about two to three hours being interviewed by police.

Tyler's mother, mother, Pearl Bilsborrow said she wants to bring the child a blanket. She said she considers her son a hero.

Officers from the Child Abuse Unit are leading the investigation.

Suspect was out on bail: documents

A woman charged with abducting and trying to kill a 14-month-old baby had walked out of jail only days earlier following a string of recent arrests, according to court documents obtained by the Free Press.

Nikita Solange Eaglestick, 19, was out on bail at the time of Tuesday morning's horrific attack in Winnipeg's inner city. The Crown had consented to her release on Aug. 28, despite the fact she was facing a total of 14 criminal charges, including nine alleged breaches of previous court orders stemming from the past two months.

No explanation was provided to the court because there was no contested bail hearing.

Eaglestick, who has no prior criminal record of convictions, was initially arrested on July 10 in her home community of Little Grand Rapids. She was charged with assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm after a woman was allegedly attacked with a screwdriver.

RCMP released her on a promise to appear in court with several conditions. She was taken into custody days later after allegedly violating terms of her release by drinking alcohol and "failing to keep the peace" on at least two occasions.

Eaglestick applied for bail on Aug. 4 and was released, with the consent of the Crown, on similar conditions.

She was re-arrested on Aug. 21 after allegedly being found intoxicated on the remote Manitoba reserve. Eaglestick was also accused of threatening to kill two RCMP officers and resisting arrest.

Eaglestick spent another week behind bars until her Aug. 28 bail hearing in Winnipeg. The Crown agreed to her release, provided she not return to Little Grand Rapids. Her lawyer told court she would live at a residence on Selkirk Avenue in the North End. Eaglestick was once again ordered to abstain from alcohol.

Police have now charged her with attempted murder, abduction, aggravated assault and failure to comply with conditions of her bail following Tuesday's incident. Eaglestick is being held in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre. All of her pending charges will appear on today's court docket in Winnipeg.

None of the allegations has been proven and she is presumed innocent.

Eaglestick is a member of Bebo, a social-networking website, and last updated her profile in mid-August. She publicly stated her desire to one day attend university and hopefully become a psychologist. She also talked of eventually wanting to become a mother "in six or seven years."

...because a cat and a child have the same physicalities, vocalisms, and mannerisms.

ummm dude you ever been to hamilton, ontario?

I passed through there about a month and a half ago. it IS a bigger shithole than winnipeg, but I dont think its quite as dysfunctional. it looks like a canadian version of detroit, so many crazy old boarded up buildings downtown.

when I was waiting for the bus out to the airport at that big park/plaza thing downtown the skids were out basking in the sun, drinking and fighting with each other. this 20something woman pushing a stroller sat down next to me, she had some boss tattoos including some script on her neck that had a street name on it (I forget what), repping the block clearly. she paced around for awhile until a shitty primer grey cavalier pulled up and one of the white trash dudes inside starting talking to her. it was an animated conversation that ended up with her screaming something about how "trina doesnt need that shit right now. you tell mike to leave her the fuck alone, he's the reason she just got out of jail last week." it brought a tear to my eye.

PS - saw you up on the GO trip from Toronto to the Hammer in quite a few spots.
