^I love that thread.

I listened to madlib,Ian,Talib,Mos,Wu etc etc.

Then got into more jazz because of madlib shades of blue album.

Than Aretha and Madelin Peyroux (sp) were up there and Motown stuff.

About 18 I started to branch away from rap/hip-hop and move towards stuff

like two gallants and the viels.

My taste in music is so schizophrenic, and it's all because of my youth.

1980 (Age 5):

My mother tells me my favorite song was “Do you think I’m Sexy.”

She says I would dance around in the backseat and dance, while I tried to sing along. I guess I would just make up words that kind of rhymed with the beat. I have a vague memory of my brother turning to me saying "wow! you sound just like him!" As a kid, I believe him. As an adult, I see he was just busting my balls.

Another song I used to love was Anita Ward's "Ring my bell."

I was also blessed with my mother's case of 45's.

Shadows of the Knight "Gloria"

Rolling Stones "Paint it Black"

I was also feeling Heart's "Barracuda"

as well as George Thorogood's "One Scotch, One Bourboun, One Beer"

It's 29 years later and I still think all these songs are the shit. I was 5 years old and had no idea what Thorogood was singing about, but I knew the song was bad ass.

1985 (10 years old)

My older brother was a metalhead, so I was introduced to the classics around this year.

and of course my favorite band as a kid:

Now, so I don't paint the wrong picture, I WAS NOT some grimey metal head kid. I was a lanky goofball kid with a really bad haircut, who just happened to like metal. I mean I had the jean jacket and "I hate everything" attitude, but I wasn't metal by any terms and conditions.

By 1989 I was all about skateboarding, and my music tastes changed. Metal started getting a little too.....

...and I started hearing more about bands like:

At the same time I'm getting into these bands, I'm also getting into:

nwa.jpg

biz-markie.jpg

So by 1990, I'm into metal, hip hop, punk and post punk. One day I went to Art Class, and this skinhead kid brought in a tape.

This shit blew me away, so the next day he brought these in for me to copy.

I remember shortly after that, we went on a field trip into Boston. They took us to faneuil hall and I bought this:

Then in 1990/91, I went to a matinée show to see Murphy's Law and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (when they were still on Taang!).

They always played matinée shows, so I'd always go. Those shows were some of the most fun I had as a kid.

So by 1993 I was 18 and started smoking pot, a lot. I was also going through some major identity crisis. I ended up meeting hippies when I went to Community College (The Country Club of RI). I'd spend more time smoking pot in the parking lot, listening to live bootlegs of the Greatful Dead. So I started getting into that stuff, as well as all the classic rock I grew up with. The year I was 19 wasn't much different, more or less just more extensions off of what I've already posted. Except that's when I started really getting into jazz, reggae, and ska.

And that's it. That's my time line of music up through my teens in a nutshell.

Well I followed Shai's suggestion and created an 8 track mix. Hopefully it gives you a good idea of my musical taste growing up, well at least what surrounded me. More importantly I hope you enjoy the music haha.

*edit I am retarded and can't seem to figure out how to embed the link to my music properly. Help please. thanks

Yeah Earl I hear you...I just listed the 6-7 things I could remember... I had my parent's vinyl collection which was full of T Rex , David Bowie , Hank Williams Sr. , Waylon Jennings , Johnny Cash , Pink Floyd , etc...and to be quite honest I might be considered a music snob by some but fuck it . I can't easily say I listen to everything , when I am the pickiest motherfucker out there .
