It's the biggest movie of the summer that practically no one has seen.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra opens Friday, but Paramount Pictures isn't screening the blockbuster for critics beforehand. Only a select few writers from blogs and movie websites have seen it for review - such as Harry Knowles, the self-professed "Head Geek" from Ain't It Cool News - and their opinions have been mostly positive.

While appealing to a sense of patriotism nationwide, the plan also is inspired by the disparity that existed between the critical trashing Transformers: Rise of the Fallen received and the massive crowds it drew at the box office.

"G.I. Joe is a big, fun, summer event movie - one that we've seen audiences enjoy everywhere from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to Phoenix, " said Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount Pictures. "After the chasm we experienced with Transformers 2 between the response of audiences and critics, we chose to forgo opening-day print and broadcast reviews as a strategy to promote G.I. Joe. We want audiences to define this film."

With a reported production budget of $175-million (U.S.) and a cast that includes Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Marlon Wayans and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, G.I. Joe follows the adventures of an elite team using high-tech spy and military equipment to take down a corrupt arms dealer. It comes from director Stephen Sommers, whose previous films include The Mummy and Van Helsing.

"It's silly. It's a film that plays on its own terms," he said. "I don't think reviews will kill it but I think it'll get a more positive response than they expect. It's a big, silly, pulpy, cartoony action film and it makes no apologies for being that way."

 so far it has a 91% from top critics- 10 out of 11 positive. But it looks like a fail.

I mean, the Baroness ain't even from Eastern Europe in the movie, and that kid from 3rd rock from the sun plays cobra commander? I will, of course, check it out anyway as I always do with these movies. I'm intrigued by the positive reviews so far.

PE #3: That's the consensus around my parts, we all think it's gonna suck, can't believe the 3rd rock kid is in it, but we're all gonna crack open some junior mints and check that shit anyway.

based on these blog reviews, it's better than the trailer makes it look. Then again, Time Out New York and Aint It Cool News aren't really top critics, so...

im not seeing this shit. when did gi joes ever use some accelerator suit?

this movie had fail scrawled all over its face before the trailers came out.

Hollywood needs to stop making movies involving childhood favorites for a while.

And why is there no thread on District 9? that movie looks retarded dope. mecha and aliens?!

I had no interest in seeing this, but the genuine feeling of surprise being shown by reviewers intrigue me. Especially the reaction to the accelerator suits, which every reviewer hated seeing in the trailers, but then realized that the way they're used in the movie is to basically recreate how you would make your action figures jump in the air and smash against each other when you were 9 years old.

Screenings of District 9 however, has everyone seriously shitting their pants with how awesome it is. It's apparently a solid kick to the nuts of a movie that hasn't been seen in a while and people aren't quite expecting.

I think it looks alright, but I prefer the Joes with cool vehicles, not Cyborg Football suits.

As a kid, I only played with and bought Cobra vehicles and figures.

Also, Baroness not having an accent is megahurtz. They should have cast Aletta Ocean.

Word is a shitton of vehicles and weapons from the cartoons/toys show up in the movie.
