WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- DC Fire and EMS Spokesperson Alan Etter has confirmed reports that two trains have collided near the Fort Totten Metro station.

Etter has confirmed there are two people dead from the collision, and multiple injuries with some of those injuries being serious and possibly even critical in what he termed a "mass casualty event." There are still people trapped in the wreckage, and one train is on top of the other train.

According to some officials, the two trains may have been traveling in opposite directions on the same track.

The crash happened just after 5 p.m. on an above-ground portion of the Metro Red Line. It happened near the Langley Park Bridge at the intersection of 3rd and Oglethorpe N.E.
