Beer Tax, FTL! Thanks Obama...thanks.

healthcare is NOT a right. If that was the case then no one would have to pay whether its $8 or $90.

thats fucking bullshit, im sorry. Im sick of these leaches soaking up life from other peoples fruits of labor.

oh ps- ^ this is coming from a person who has dedicated most of his life to helping the needy as well as animals (no hippie), trust me on this...i do not kick puppies. haha.

i work in health insurance. it's a fucking scam. but it pays the bills.

i agree also that you should take care of your own. but there are so many god damned exceptions to that one rule that make people go, "oh yea, well of course take care of THAT person", that it's irresponsible and arrogant to say you wouldn't want to help them.

we are ALL one doctor or hospital visit away from being uninsurable. tomorrow you could come down with lymphoma (happened to a few people i know). What then? you're insurance carrier takes care of you? tell that to the people that have been priced out of their own insurance plan by blue cross or others. shits mad weak, its all about money. we should just give it to everybody...

now the beer tax is a clever idea, cuz regardless, beer sells. whether it's dollar beer night or $9 beer night, alcohol still sells in clubs and bars - it's a sin tax essentially. if it weren't for redneck beer drinking high cholesterol having slobs who watch Nascar (just one example of many), we might have affordable healthcare if people didn't go out of their fucking way to be unhealthy.

edit: see the bacon thread.

The funny thing is that I think adequate health care should be affordable, and if you can't afford that it should be subsidized. The problem is that every time I see how it's going to be implemented/paid for, I shake my head.

Besides, there are far more pressing things to be spending that money on right now than health care. The economic stimulus bill hasn't stimulated job creation, it's just been keeping some fucked-up banks and financial institutions on life support...and they're not holding up their end of the deal by loaning money or extending credit to get people out there spending, they're telling everyone to spend less, save their money...which is crazy, considering interest rates are practically nonexistent and that the banks (where you save your money) have a pretty bad recent track record of going belly up.

I don't know, Obama...I'm not seeing much change here. You got a couple things right so far (talking to Cuba, telling the defense industry to take a flying fuck at a rolling donut) but on other key issues you're just spinning your wheels.

so wait...

im already paying $90 a WEEK for my own personal health insurance and now I have to pay for everyone else who is too irresponsible to pay their own like I do(excluding the 3% that are truly in need)? F**k that!

Im sorry man, but this game called life is survival of the fittest. Either step up and handle your shit or step down....

how typically american of you.

the me first fuck everyone else mentality is just bred into you from day one huh?

if you had a ntional care plan, you probably wouldnt have to pay 90 dollars a week (youre getting hosed on that one). more like, 30 dollars a month.

god forbid people get some healthcare and you have to fork over 2 dollars more for an 8 dollar 30 pack of beer. life is over! argggggggggggh i cant pay my bills with that 2 dollars!

riding the system? thats how i feel about a bitch with 7 kids on welfare at age 28. not about cancer patients who can't afford treatment.

there is a line.

and shai: coming up with extra money is always difficult. so shaking your head is all you're doing for a solution?

formulate a plan for the masses and pitch it to the people in power. that's what the internet should be used for imo. you have the ability, more than ever before in history, to change the way the worlds looks at things, with a few keystrokes and mouse clicks.

anyone can complain. you are NOT special.

Survival of the fittest is really an antiquated idea or mode of thinking. With all the advancements we've made just even in the last 100 years that really doesn't come into play as much. If anything we have the means for the masses to be well taken care of, but its that fuck everyone else attitude that prevents that from happening. Now if we had a complete break down of life as we know it and we go back to hunting for food then I agree it would be about survival of the fittest. That would then make sense. If we were really talking survival here the majority of would fail..

Do you mother fuckers know how to build a cell phone and make it work?

Or a car for that matter..

Yeah..

I can't really buy into that.. Its a few who provide for the all.. Being that most of the population doesn't create or make anything relative to their own survival. So now we have system which in effect needs to care for us, since we are not surviving on the daily the way we used to.

I'd rather pay two more dollars and not see the dude on the bus with some crazy street made knife fighting off the voices in his head..

Just saying..

I did. Tax the hell out of the profits that HMOs and pharmaceutical companies rake in to create a safety net.

Or pass a law mandating that any American business that has 51% or more of its operations, sales and infrastructure based within the continental US cannot incorporate offshore to get out of paying capital gains tax. Or institute a progressive estate/luxury tax. Or pull 75% of our troops out of Iraq. There's lots of options here.

Advocating a 25% tax on consumer goods during a recession to pay for a plan that has never materialized with no real guarantee that the money will be actually spent on health care? No thanks.

Or a car for that matter..

Yeah..

This is funny because I was thinking along a similar line in another thread about global warming that turned into a discussion about how environmental awareness is being co-opted by big business...

Yeah, the earth will survive, but we may not.

Which was my point all along.

Three billion people on this planet don't really have shit. The whole "George Jetson/Star Trek/flying car/world peace" paradigm depends on a more even distribution of resources and at this point in human evolution (the "gimmie-gimmie-I-want-more" phase), we're so far removed from that being a possibility...it's sad when you think about it.

So those three billion people are going to burn whatever the fuck they want and hijack ships and drive 1982 Tercels because the first world doesn't give a fuck if people in Africa or Southeast Asia have CFLs or Priuses much, less enough to eat or clean water. The first world is desperately trying to con itself into thinking that it's making a difference when it's really business as usual, but painted green and packaged in some feel-good 40% post-consumer waste cardboard box....and as usual, the third world gets the hind tit and is desperately trying to survive because they don't have the luxury of delusions.

If you want to make a difference, BUY LESS and don't buy crap you don't fucking need. You don't need 30 pairs of Nikes, you can do fine with three pairs of good shoes. Plant a few trees or a garden, recycle, clean the neighborhood. Don't buy a fucking new car just because it's a hybrid.

You know, little things. Or not doing big things. It's not hard.

Not really. If living standards were equalized for everyone on the planet, 1st world standards would drop drastically. Nobody would have much fancy shit. Any realization of our visions of the techno-future depends on our ability to manage resources MUCH more efficiently than we do now. Maybe that's what you meant?

But I DO think people in the first world have too high of a standard of living. We have millions of "poor" people here in the States who are obese and own six cars along with a house full of shit they don't need. That makes no sense to me. The definition of the word "poor" in the first world is "insolvent", whereas in the third world it means "completely assed out." You don't get to eat the rich people's trash if you're poor, you go to the poor people's dump and hope for the best.

That's not to say that we need to get on their level, but we're too materialistic for our own good. We need to get past that point.

Imagine if along with all this environmental awareness in industry came a push for quality that went something like this- "We're going to cut our output by a third and use local, well- paid labor to concentrate on making the best products we can, and also to save energy and raw materials. That does mean that the price of our goods will have to go up, but we're committed to doing right by the environment and to provide you with quality goods that will last a lifetime."

That would be pretty nice, wouldn't it?

It would be nice, its unfortunate that it cannot exist without consumer complicity(which is riddled with problems that I wont go into), and in my opinion strong guidance by government.

I don't want to derail the thread but I see a connection here.

Back on topic...Concrete, let me take a guess- your beef is not so much that you don't want to help people, it's that you don't think that this administration is going to be any more effective in implementing universal health care than the Clinton administration was. I agree with you there, and I also think it's ridiculous that this was proposed in a closed-door session...that doesn't give me much hope for any transparency or accountability regarding the creation of other new taxes down the road or how the revenue will be spent.

if the amount of money used is a total detriment and to the lame-ass drunks that will bitch about this beer tax, it'd just be cheaper to move to canada. boo fuckin` hoo. now i don't have to hear it, you don't have a beer tax, and you have healthcare. stop whining. for once something good goes on in this country, and people are more concerned with the cost of beer.

case = 30

30 / 2.00 = 5 cents a beer extra.

get the fuck over it, america. don't you have a nascar race to watch?

Well there was a time when survival depended on how resourceful you were right?

Well that's just true anymore. You can be completely useless with barely the ability to wash your ass, but we have made so that even that person can survive. We ain't living out in the wild anymore, so really everyone could be taken care of but instead the choice is to acquire and hoard. Which is sad. Not to say I'm not guilty of this on some level of course.

I suppose though we do need something to show for our hard work. We strive to live in luxury, something which isn't entirely necessary nor is it something that means the same to everyone.

fuck your opinion and everyone else like you that thinks it's all a big fucking competition .

it is a big competition though.

I'm british, we have the NHS, a "free" healthcare system paid for by taxpayers, which is heavily underfunded because to finance it properly would require a massive hike in tax which nobody's willing to pay. there's always a double standard in the uk about people complaining over the low quality of hospitals outside of london and having to wait 4-6 years for certain operations etc but to remedy that would mean everyone in the country paying about 4 or 5 times what we already pay for the NHS, which is never gonna happen. in england if you can afford to pay more then you have private insurance.

having just said that I'm glad we have a system however flawed that lets everyone get access to the medical help they need but the reality is if I personally get ill I'm going private because I'll get better care, quicker.

I have free health care yet I rarely visit a doctor maybe once a year maximum. Sure people going in hospital for a cold is annoying and a drain on our system, but it is there.

free public system doesnot mean a poor one. the plasma tv a family member of mine has is pretty good, so is the 3 day surgery wait time.

i agree witha tax on beer, fast food, candy, garbage food to pay for a health system, those things contribute hugely to health problems. maybe a break for companies who keep production local and not outsourced?

id rather pay 5c more for a beer and have health care for those sponging ass system milikng cancer patients.

beer taxes would be increased by 48 cents a six-pack, from the current 33 cents

OMG WHAT AN OUTRAAGEEEEEEE

50 C MORE ON A 6PACK THAT ALREADY COST LIKE 10 DOLLARS

OOOOH NOOOOOOO

NEXT THE DAMN SOCIALIST ARE GOING TO TAKE THE LAND AND FACTORIES

jesus christ god forbid 50c helps some kid get an inhaler or fixes a broken arm

honestly who the fuck is too lazy to provide healthcare for themselves?

does that make any sense? you malthusian cock suckers think your that responsible for your circumstance?
