TheoHuxtable..
^THANK YOU... Maybe next time you'll actually read the conversation before jumping into the fray. You're a fucking idiot -- those are two different points. One I support, one I don't. I haven't changed my position on what ILB "meant" when he was talking about proving the earth is round without any existing scientific data. I haven't changed my position on what ILB "meant" when he was talking about proving the earth is round without any existing scientific data. Are you fucking drunk??? They were ALL COSIGNING EACHOTHER THAT NOBODY BORN BEFORE 1969 HAD ANY WAY OF KNOWING THAT THE WORLD WAS ROUND!!! AND THAT THE PHOTO'S TAKEN BY ASTRONAUTS (only the ones after 1969, apparently) WERE WHAT PROVED THAT THE EARTH WAS ROUND. JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, THEO. LEARN HOW TO FUCKING READ!!!! :dunce:

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, THEO. LEARN HOW TO READ!!!! :dunce: Wrong again. What they said about 1969 is something I didn't read at the time, which means I didn't cosign on it. I only read ILB's completely different statement about explaining to someone how the earth is round without any photographs/scientific evidence. They are two different issues that you are trying to make as being the same issue. That's like saying if nsmb incorrectly said that the sun revolves around the earth, and if ILB were to cosign, and then ILB were to say "the sun is hot", and I agree with his point that the sun is hot, then you'd claim that I'm cosigning with nsmb's totally different point about the sun revolving around the earth. Two different points.

TheoHuxtable..
The only thing I agreed with you on is that people knew the earth was round before 1969. But we ARE disagreeing on: 1. Whether or not me agreeing with ILB's seperate hypothetical statement is the same as agreeing on nsmb's seperate statement about 1969 (and no, it's not the same). 2. What ILB meant when he made that statement. And you're saying we're agreeing? Make that #3 on something we disagree on. How many beers did you have tonight? I think you're projecting. Spitfire15
Haha. Jesus Christ. Yeah, youre totally misunderstanig. There was plenty of evidence to support it. But everyone kind of had a collective sigh of relief when they were actually able to go up and photograph the planet, proving that their theories and data were correct. But youll probably misinterpret this. Oh and LOLOLOL @ calling your dad. STAY SIK!
iloveboxcars
even with the first post all i was saying is normal people wouldnt be able to explain it properly. i might have worded it improperly, but i was pretty tired. basically what im saying is if you built a time machine, traveled back to 1969 (or 1939), went up to some random on the street and asked "explain how you know the earth is round" the answer would be somewhere between "what?" "pictures tell me so" and "people have been sailing around it for years" those answers i feel are insufficient.

The point I was making, is that I won't believe shit until I SEE it. Most people don't look up, they look forward. The people who looked up were usually more attuned to what the fuck is really going on around them, not just doing the day to day bs of being a person. THUS, before 1969, and before sheeple seen it on TEEEEE VEEEEE... you simple fucker... it was widely believed to be ONLY A THEORY that the Earth was round. Still, there were skeptics. Maybe you can argue the point till you're blue in the face, but the general public are fucking dumb. People go on quoting and misquoting whatever the fuck it is THEY THINK THEY KNOW (you.), but until there's hard evidence, like a picture of a round blue Earth taken from space, people still will believe what they see. Smart people throughout time have been murdered and made fun of because they went against popular belief. Until 1969, when all the world saw a man get shot into space and land on a fucking MOON, there was a wide range of ideas about who and what and where we are. FUCK MAN! There's people today that say the moon landing was even faked. So take your middle school standardized education and stick it up your ass. TheoHuxtable..
There were round globes before 1969. It wasn't a "theory" that the world was round. The first pictures of earth from space was taken in the 1940's. Still, with centuries of exploring & cartography, a map of the "round" earth had already been configured. ERGO (THEREFORE) before 1969, it was the popular opinion (as in at least 51% of the entire worlds population thinks this) THAT THE FUCKING EARTH MAY HAVE POSSIBLY BEEN FLAT! fuck... all i am saying. shai
based on oberservations on earth? what isaac newton observed when he saw an apple drop lead to the the discovery. and given that matter of any mass has a relative gravitational field it can be extrapolated to describe the earth. But that gets into theoretical thinking, it's not strictly empirical. You have to do some heavy mental lifting to reach the conclusion that mass=gravity. It would be equally easy to say "The world is a giant magnet...weight is determined by how much iron something contains....birds, the sun, and clouds contain less iron, etc." If you had to come up with an explanation for gravity on the spot based on what you could directly observe, that posit could work if you were using 17th century logic and knowledge. Same goes with assuming the earth is round without seeing it or picures that confirm that firsthand. Doesn't matter if it's correct, both sides (flat and round) have compelling arguments based on empirical evidence. However, direct observation has settled the matter, anyone who tells you that they think the earth is flat in 2009 in spite of all the evidence to the contrary is either crazy or pulling your leg. I thought it was accepted here that the people from the "Flat Earth" website were not really serious and are probably just a bunch of dudes from 4chan. I mean I looked at some of the mod/admin names on that site and they had names like "LOLWUT" and "ORRY" so I'm guessing these dudes aren't serious. Yes cartographers and explorers do make up a small percentage of the entire population; that really isn't the point -- maps of the world and information that the world is round was readily available to the average citizen. Thanks for explaining what ergo means; I had no idea. And please cite the source of information that shows that most of the world felt the earth could be flat before 1969. I don't think any information exists. I have plenty of family members that were living before 1969 and every one of them were aware that the world was round at the time. "Flat earth" theory was popular centuries ago, not in the 1900's.

tutleone
In this case I agree with DAO -- men & craft were sent in to space well before 1969, and photos were taken of the earth as early as the 1940's. 1969 only represented the year man first went on the moon. Even before the first photo of the earth, it was known for centuries that the earth was round and it was generally accepted amongst most people with at least a basic education. anyone ever heard of CIRCUMNAVIGATION. PEOPLE HAVE KNOW THE EARTH IS ROUND FOR A WHILE BECAUSE MAGELLAN CIRCUMNAVIGATED THE GLOBE. * Ferdinand Magellan, 1519-1522, Portuguese navigator at the behest of the Spanish crown led the first expedition to circumnavigate the world between August 1519 and April 1521. However, he was killed in the Philippine island of Cebu in April 27, 1521. His second in command, the basque Juan Sebastián Elcano completed the journey to Spain in 1522. The 18 survivors of Ferdinand Magellan's expedition, in the Victoria completed the circumnavigation returning to Sanlucar de Barrameda-Seville on 8 September 1522 after a journey of 3 years and 1 month. So, they were the first to round the world in a single expedition. -WIKIPEDIA
