Wasn't the original version of 'Tainted Love' considered Northern Soul?

Northern Soul was a movement in the UK during the late 60's to early 80's. It was like raves with soul music, and it even though it wasn't as candy raver, it was still loaded with drugs. The track selection was a little different from the US's soul movement. The kids were more into the b-sides then the hits, and the sound was a little different from the Motown hits that were the craze in the states. It was also around the time of the skinhead/mod movement, and kind of went hand in hand with that as well as the Jamaicans coming over with the classic reggae sound that later influence the English Ska movement.

I'd throw some rocksteady in this thread, but it's a good topic and we should roll with that.

Don't quote me on any of this, but I think the beginning of all this was summed up in Quadrophenia. Then by the 70's, it was pretty much like this:

This photo below is from 1973.

So as all this is going on in the UK, American Hip Hop is in the earliest of it's birth stages in New York. So these kids obviously had no clue about breakdancing. Hell, if it was 1973, "Breaking" hadn't even developed. The Rocksteady crew that broke it out globally, hadn't even come to light yet. So keep that in mind when you watch how these kids dance. Some of the ground work has similarities to breakdancing.

You can watch that Wigan Casino documentary, and think the shit looks "gay," but it was the 70's UK, post sexual revolution, and heavily enhanced with uppers and downers. I've got a lot of respect for all that shit. The dancing is insane, the parties look damn fun, and from what I hear, the DJ's were some of the most powerful dancefloor fillers. Get a bunch of pills in you, and go to town, nothing wrong with that.

This is a really good video:

It's a "modern" remix, but still a damn good song and video of Northern Soul styled dancing. At the 1:40 mark, there is this Asian chick that starts dancing. If I was hopped up on pills, and saw her dancing like that to some damn good soul, I'd wifey status her in a heartbeat.

Love the music, those photo's may not be accurate for the 2009 north east scene. All the pics I see involve neckties and dresses, some of my boys came up here for a northern soul party and said everyone gets dressed up for it and the dancing is amazing. They went to get changed for the party and came out with full blown suits like they were about to go fight a case. I had to talk them into just hitting the bar, I'll be that fool that can't dance but not the sore thumb in street gear dancing like Carlton Banks.

Yeah, I'm at that point in my life, where I'm not dressing up for anything that isn't Halloween or theme party related. I've never heard of any Northern Soul parties in the city --drop me a PM if you hear about one. I'm curious what they would be like, seeing that it's American kids most likely.

As for the photos not being accurate for the 2009 east scene, are you saying it's more like a Swing style? I have no clue about any current revival (other than some Dap Tone bands). Those photos are probably early 70's, and it's funny how much they resemble America's disco era fashion. Except disco got a little more playboyish, where northern soul was a little more youthful.

I think some people will watch the northern soul videos, and appreciate the really acrobatic dance moves, but call it out as gay. The limp wrists and wrestling shirts? Well, if it smells like a fart.....

But, you really have to look at where they got that influence. The whole dance style grew from what they saw when American soul acts played over there. If you watch a lot of soul greats, they do some limp wrist moves around the stage while they sing. So these kids kind of incorporated that with some footwork. It's the same as how b-boys/girls formed their own upper body style while top rocking.

I have a lot of respect for the whole Northern Soul movement. The whole culture of record swapping, crazy ass dancing, racial unity, good music, and tons of drugs is not at all bad for any youth movement.

I know there are some UK people on this site. What's your take on this, seeing as it's your people and not mine. Is there anything still going on?

Are there any good books on Northern Soul?

Anything that is about subverting the norm in a positive manner is good by me.

There's "Spirit Of '69" but it's more about skinhead culture...not to mention that it's hard to find and expensive as hell (I see paperback copies going for $200+).

Thanks Earl, I'm hoping though that some of our members from across the pond will chime in.

First one that drew my attention was the one with drugs.. Haha..

Myspace search it and find the pages to preview the sounds.

Find dates people are spinning and roll through.

I never use myspace, and never search the music stuff, so I'd be lost in that. I'll just keep my ears open. I'm sure it's not like it was back in the day.
