The Anatomy of Melancholy

200px-The_Anatomy_of_Melancholy_by_Robert_Burton_frontispiece_1638_edition.jpg

I was listening to a discussion on this book over the weekend. Sounds interesting. Its been in print since the 1600’s (!!) I hope its not in ye olde English speak. Will get started before the end of next week… Will hopefully finish by the end of next year

fuck reading anything longer than this post on a computer.

i will never own an e-reader, and i too print out documents. id rather waste some paper and kill trees to keep printed word alive. i have this fear that eventually in my lifetime, or even by the time i have children, we will see the end of books. everything will be published only in e-version.

my coworker prints out reams of scientific papers and it drives me nuts

it's time to get used to reading that crap online, you are killing the environment for the 'feel' of something

books will never go away completely, just like vinyl.do you also think mp3's will portend the end of physical copies of music? yeah, right.. that's why we still press music on LP.

your fear is an irrational one.

the much more likely thing is that our environment will get crushed by our misuse of resources.

i got an e-reader, and yes, it takes energy, but hardly any

there is also no replacement for the convenience of bringing what would be physically massive books along with oneself on vacation

i am also getting really sick of looking at my bookcase, filled to the brim with books and honestly, i'm ready to get rid of most of them. they don't give me satisfaction when i look at them and think "wow, what an experience it was to turn all those pages.. i'll never replace that feeling of paper on my fingers" ....nope, i think back on the stories.

easy tiger, its just MY opinion (and apparently the opinion of a few people who agree with me)

i adjust my carbon footprint in other ways. nobody is perfect, everyone has vices or tendencies that fuck up the environment. yes, even you. i walk/bike whenever possible, shop locally, recycle/compost and have significantly decreased my meat consumption. so guess what- if i want to support printed word, i think i am entitled to that.

most of my vacations have me toting around one large backpack filled half with books and half with clothes and i wouldn't have it any other way.

and i really feel bad for you that you cant appreciate a beautifully stocked library/bookshelf. feel free to send the books my way!

ok, tiger. we are not arguing.

let me explain this to you: sometimes people have opinions that don't agree. it actually doesn't mean that you are being personally attacked;

i feel really bad for you that when someone has a different opinion than you, you feel like you have to rush to type out a defense of yourself.

i was merely pointing out MY OPINION that your fear (and you called it that) was irrational, especially in the context of our modern world, where we have had the chance to observe that videogames did not end board games, mp3's and digital music didn't end analog music, and digital media won't destroy analog media.. ...it's an improvement on it.

so guess what? you don't have to prove to me what you are entitled to (really, i'd advise that you shouldn't have to prove anything to anyone) ...if you think are environmentally conscious or responsible, great, but who cares.. because i do know that the behavior of one individual usually has no impact on the world at large.. it's the mentality of the masses.

if you'd like to pay for shipping, i can send books your way.

I'm thinking of getting a kindle purely for reading at work.

But what I want to know is, is it easy to get books for free? I don't really fuck with torrents.

i signed onto the whole torrent thing and i'm glad i did

basically any book or movie i want, i can get for free and pretty quickly.

if you have a kindle, just make sure it's a file type that is supported, and i've had no problem with that either.

if you want to continue avoiding torrents but still find free books it might be a bit tougher.

anyway, i'm pretty stoked on taking another long vacation without having to lug a laptop, books, mp3 player, or phone around. i really wasn't sure how i'd feel about the e-reader, as i never wanted one, someone just gave me one. but this is one arena where it really paid off, in so many ways, to have an open mind. i feel like any illusion i had about the benefits of physicality was swept away almost instantly.

yeah, its harder to get ebooks now without a torrent.

library.nu was a dope website that had a huge database of books...this is what the owner of that site has to say now:

http://library.nu/lnu.html

ebookee.org is still around, but lacks a lot of books....every once in a while, you can pick up some obscure books on the /rs/ section of 4chan and search ".pdf" files.

manybooks.net has mostly classical literature

that is all i pretty much use.

also, the /lit/ section of 4chan has some useful info as seen below:

Recommended Reading:

http://4chanlit.wikia.com/wiki/Recommended_Reading

Find here a list of recommended reading compiled by /lit/ users, please refrain from posting topics asking for recommendations until after you have checked this link. It also contains a list of valuable links when looking for books, including 'must read' book lists and the Western Canon.

Free Electronic Books (Ebooks)

Try the following websites for access to free ebooks:

http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

http://library.nu

http://avaxhome.ws/ebooks

http://ebookee.com/

http://manybooks.net/

Another resource available is #bookz, check these links for more information!

irc: http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Bookz

irc.undenet.org#bookz

If the book is not found on one of these resources then it is unlikely a free e-book version of it exists, try a simple Google search before posting here. However it is unlikely a member of /lit/ will be able to help you if it is not listed on one of these resources.

E-Readers:

Searching for the perfect E-Reader? For you or as a gift?

Please search these websites:

http://www.mobileread.com/

http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_Reader_Matrix

for all the information currently available on E-readers

If, after THOROUGHLY searching these sources, you still do not have the answer you're looking for then please feel free to post a thread here asking for help. However we will most likely not know the answer if it is not posted on the listed sites.

Converting ebook file formats:

Okay now you have your ebooks you might want to convert them to a more e-reader friendly format. Most ebooks come in a .txt or /htm; format, the most e-reader friendly format is .epub. We suggest converting all files to this format for the best results.

The best tool for this is a free program called Calibre:

http://calibre-ebook.com/

It also serves as a good way of cataloguing and sorting your ebooks.

Some things to note:

/lit/ is NOT a homework board. Any posters posting homework help threads will be dealt with. However discussing homework you have been given is allowed as long as it generates healthy discussion. But just asking for answers will result in a ban.

/lit/ is NOT a fan-fiction board, please refrain from posting this.

/lit/ ENCOURAGES you all to submit your own writings for critique, judgement and revision.

if i ever do spend the money to get an ereader (or a tablet like the nook or the kindle fire), i will probably use the torrents method, but with all the b.s. theyve been pulling with the ereaders, im not ready to invest any time soon.

(bullshit including the nook having 16GB but only 1GB for your own content and having to buy the rest through B&N...or Kindle Fire limiting you to only 8GB...or monthly cloud fees etc etc)

e-readers are cool and convenient just like ipods are, but just because i have an ipod doesn't mean i wouldn't rather own a band's record. same goes for a book. i can't bring records to work, and you can't take a bunch of books everywhere.

anyway, still waiting for an original copy of the shining in the mail from a friend, but this is next in line..

It's a collection of shorts and a few cartoons and some poetry (didn't read that, each to their own).

Highly recommended if you enjoyed such flicks as Pineapple Express, Step Brothers, Get Him to the Greek etc

Gives an insight into how the writer's sense of humor works, includes a bit of Bill Hicks, bit of Steve Martin, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Adam Sandler to name a few academics

Plus this is his wife...

... and she's smashable, so extra points for that.
