Green Line trains delayed by teen walking on tracks

August 5, 2010 10:02 AM | No Comments

Trains on the CTA Green Line were briefly delayed this morning when a teenage boy was seen walking on the elevated tracks near a stop in the Austin neighborhood, authorities said.

CTA officials received a report of a person on the westbound tracks at the Central Avenue stop of the Lake Street line at about 8:45 a.m., officials said. A CTA agent saw the 17-year-old boy walking on the tracks and called police, said Chicago Police News Officer Robert Perez.

When police arrived, they saw the teen trying to get into a stopped CTA train through an emergency hatch on top of the train, Perez said. Officers were able to catch the teen and brought him to the Austin District station, Perez said.

Power to the third rail was turned off for three minutes, from 8:46 a.m. to 8:49 a.m., resulting in a five-minute delay in service, said CTA spokeswoman Kim Myles. Service resumed after the person on the tracks was caught, Myles said.

The teen was expected to be cited with criminal trespass on a complaint signed by a CTA employee, Perez said.
