Via Wired.com: Riot police have taken to the streets of several cities in Mexico to ... defend emo kids? A series of attacks on dyed-hair, eye-makeup-wearing emo kids began in early March when several hundred people went on an emo-beating rampage in Querétaro, a town of 1.5 million about 160 miles north of Mexico City. The next week, shaggy-haired emo kids were harassed again by punks and rockabillys in the capital, prompting police protection and a segment on the TV news. Most recently, a Mexican newspaper reported that metal heads and gangsters have warned Tijuana's emo kids to stay away from the town's fair next month. Daniel Hernandez of the LA times has been covering the events closely on his blog as well: A bizarre wave of mob emo-bashings is sweeping across Mexico. The movement is being generated on message boards and social networking sites by non-emo youth who highly dislike the emo look and attitude. The spark came first in Queretaro on March 7. An estimated 800 young people poured into the city's Centro Historico hunting for emos to beat the crap out of. They found some. The next weekend it spread to Mexico City, where emos faced off against punks and rockabillies at the Glorieta de Insurgents, the epicenter of emo social space in the capital. There's also been reports of anti-emo violence in Durango, Colima, and elsewhere. * * * * * * * * * * As awesome and hilarious as this sounds, apparently the movement is just thinly veiled gay-bashing. The emos are referred to as "emosexuals", which sounds almost exactly like the spanish pronunciation of "homosexual" (silent H, those crazy fuckers). That kind of sucks. There's been jocks vs. nerds, hippies vs. punks, goths vs. preps, etc., for pretty much ever, but they're describing this as the first time that virtually all of the youth subcultures have banded together against one group.
