It tells me what applications and daemons are running on my laptop in real time and what resources they're using. The numbers change every second in real time. If you have a Mac, open up a terminal window and type "top" in at the prompt. You'll get the PID table. To kill top, press Q. Ctrl+alt+del on a PC does more or less the same thing.
