I know it's extremely disciplined and subtle, but the end result still looks pretty much like two guys brutally bashing the living shit out of each other. It's been growing in popularity and sophistication, but it still doesn't feel like a "sport", the way boxing does. There's an elegance and rhythm to boxing that comes from what the competitors are limited to doing that makes it stand out. It's still two guys bashing the shit out of each other, but it feels somehow above that. That said, I'm gonna go ahead and say it... this fight has potential to completely suck dick. I was ultra pumped for it before, but the more I think about it, the more I feel like it's gonna be 2-3 rounds of distance and measuring each other up, followed by a grapple fest where nobody really lands significant blows throughout the entire fight until Mayweather wins by decision for having landed more jabs. It's still two guys bashing the shit out of each other, but it feels somehow above that. i know alot of people feel this way, but this is the reaction to a sport in it's infancy. boxing wasn't exactly considered a sport for a long time either. i personally don't think there is anything less elegant about a thai boxer, even though it is decidedly more brutal. alot of mma fights these days are essentially kickboxing fights with very limited grappling. grappling on the other hand can be boring for sure and isn't exactly elegant, but if you have even a little bit of knowledge about it, it's got it's own beauty and is basically chess. again, it's a very young sport and it's going to take time for people to get up to speed and accept it as a 'sport'. El Mamerro Posted May 3, 2007 Share Posted May 3, 2007 I think there's definitely elegance in the stand up fighting and even the grappling, but when a lot of the fights end up with one dude on top of the other straight bashing dude's face in, it kinda takes a step backwards. It really becomes about just violent and total overpowering, finesse goes out the window. It's definitely come a long way though... like Theo, I remember watching the very first UFC's, and that was on some fucking crazy pit fighting shit. Just straight craziness.
