Swiss man guilty of insulting Thai king

A Swiss man was convicted in Thailand today on charges of lese majeste and damaging property for defacing images of revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Oliver Rudolf Jufer (57), could face up to 75 years in jail.

Oliver Jufer arrives at a Chiang Mai court this morning

He reversed his earlier plea and pleaded guilty to five acts of lese majeste at a hearing held behind closed doors to minimise the disrespect to King Bhumibol (79), whom many Thais regard as semi-divine.

Sentencing was set for March 29th.

Jufer was arrested in December in the northern city of Chiang Mai after black paint was sprayed on several portraits of the king, the world's longest reigning monarch who marked 60 years on the throne last June. Police reports said Jufer was drunk when the portraits were defaced.

"Every Thai constitution says the king is worshipped. No one can offend him," Public Prosecutor Bhanu Kwanyuen told reporters outside the Chiang Mai Provincial Court.

"If this happened in England, it would not be this serious," But in Thailand, the King is worshipped and revered. Whatever the offence against him, Thais cannot accept it," he said.

Lese majeste carries a penalty of three to 15 years in jail in Thailand, one of the few countries that prosecutes strictly anything deemed to demean the royal family.

Jufer, wearing orange-brown prison clothes with iron shackles on his ankles and wrists, said nothing to reporters. His guilty plea could help reduce the sentence, but he would almost certainly spend time in jail, his lawyer Komkrit Kunyodying said.

The case has received almost no coverage in the Thai press and today's hearing was covered mainly by reporters from foreign newspapers and news agencies, who were barred from the hearing.

For most Thais, only the most delicate portrayal of the royal family is acceptable and foreigners are expected to show similar respect. Other foreigners have run afoul of the law occasionally, but jail terms are rare.

A French businessman was arrested in 1994 for insulting the monarchy during a Thai Airways flight from London with two members of the royal family on board. He was later acquitted.

That shits ridiculous... But his life is on the back end so fuck it, whats 75 more years right??? haha

Good luck kid..... You DEFinetly gonna need it..

Imagine if you lived a good life. Then retired and went on vacation to some fucked up country and got drunk and wild out and did some random dumb shit and got caught. Then was told that you were going to spend the rest of your life and die in some fucked up prison in some fucked up country with people who don't even speak your language.

And probably never see or talk to your freinds or family ever again. And probably be seen and treated as the equivalent of a child rapist/murderer by the other inmates (being as you dissed their God or whatever). And on top of all that people are joking about your situation on the internet and calling you a fucking idiot for doing the EXACT same shit that they do on a daily basis.

Now that's gotta suck.

when i was in thailand i almost tagged on the kings billboard hanging from a walk way bridge.

but a thai writer i was with luckily stopped me and explained what it was and to be careful.

it was all in thai and had the sign of royality on it which i had no clue to but shit 75 years!

i think that theres no coverage of it because if the thai king read it he would probably dismiss the case.

I love how you lump the entire rest of the globe outside of the U.S. into one equivalent category as " foriegn lands" lol.
