If you're going to buy a Mac, I suggest you do a little legwork and find a friend who can get the 25% educator discount.

All prices in US$ rounded to the nearest $10 from Newegg. Main systems only- peripherals not included. Case not included either because many people may reuse an old case, or want to choose their own case for their personal aesthetic desires. ~$20 for a cheap case, ~$50 for a nice case, ~$100+ for a expensive case.

Hard drives and DVD drive is the builder's discretion, these are just general suggestions if you have no idea what you want.

FOR ALL SYSTEMS, UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED:

RAM: G.Skill 2x1GB DDR2-800 (or Mushkin, Geil, Corsair, Patriot, Team Group, Kingston, OCZ) (~$180)

Hard Drive: Seagate 7200.10 320GB (~$80)

DVD Drive: Lite-On DVD+/-RW (~$30)

FOR NON-GAMING SYSTEMS:

Pick a gaming system below and replace the graphics card with a nVidia 7300 (~$50) and replace the PSU with the one from the budget gaming system.

Budget gaming system (~$530)

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ Brisbane (~$100)

Board: GIGABYTE GA-M55SLI-S4 Socket AM2 (~$90) (Better suggestion anyone?)

RAM: 2x512MB DDR2-667 (~$70) or spend more with the 2GB above (~$180)

Graphics: ATI x1950PRO (~$170) or save money with the nVidia 7600GT (~$110)

Hard Drive: Western Digital 160GB (~$50)

PSU: FSP Group ATX400-PA 400W(~$40)

Mid-range gaming system (~$1000)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo e6300 (~$180)

Board: Gigabyte 965P-DS3 (~$120)

Graphics: EVGA 8800GTS 320mb Superclocked(~$310)

PSU: SILVERSTONE ST50EF 500W(~$100)

High-end gaming system (~$1450)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo e6600 (~$310)

Board: Gigabyte 965P-DS3 (~$120)

Graphics: EVGA 8800GTX Superclocked(~$600)

PSU: Seasonic S12 SS-550HT 550W(~$130)

Uber gaming system (~$2900)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo x6800 (~$970)

Board: EVGA 680i (~$220)

Graphics: (2) EVGA 8800GTX Superclocked(~$1200)

PSU: Silverstone ST85F 850W (~$220)

I love how PC folks always talk smack about Apple products but never really back it up with actual reasons as to why an Apple computer is a "paper weight"... to quote someone earlier.

Someone who is a PC geek... please explain to me why an Apple Macbook Pro is no good. What doesn't it do that a Sony Vaio or Dell does? And why is that stuff important to the consumer? Just curious. I'd like to hear it from someone, finally, once and for all. Intelligent reasons why Apple is no good. I said intelligent. Not "Because they suck you art fag!!"... that's not a reason. Though that's about the extent of the reason I get most of the time.

JOKER-

i work at dell. and i admit, we;ve taken a lot of themes or ideas from apple, its pretty pathetic from a "proud of your company / take pride in being unique" stance.

-apple kills dell in design aspect (as far as coolness)

-more interesting interface / operating system (hints why vista looks so much like apples os)

-and their commercials kill any other computer maker out right now (although hp's got dope commercials to)

as far as apple's being less of a brand than dell or any other "pc" computer. obviously it's not. in fact, as most people will agree, most people who do high end graphics design or rendering, ie photoshop, etc, make music or movies, probally would be better of with a mac.

ive personally never owned a apple system, although it's crossed my mind a few times just because of the curiosity of whether or not there really is less spyware affecting the systems performance is what i'm really interested in, because it seems like now a days on a pc, you can just turn the shit on, and it eventually goes to hell in a hand basket, no matter what you're doing on it.

and that really pisses me off.

i mean, i didnt download porn or music on my good system, and eventually, due to probally myspace, its been going down hill extremely quick, thanks to spyware... and none of those fucking programs to block that crap seem to really work.

also, computers, no matter what brand they are, are pretty similiar.

sure there are better parts you can use out there (hard drives, types of memory etc...) and that makes one company better than the other, but other than that, its just different brand names on different boxes.

as for dell.... go with the business class systems, they are worlds better than the consumer line ups. dimensions or inspirons = consumer... optiplex / precisions / latitudes = business class systems.

i was looking to get a apple desktop, as i prefer desktops over notebooks for the most part, but their desktops don't seem very expandable, or i dunno, i just wasnt feeling the case layout.

but id agree, their notebooks look pretty dope, and their software does seem to make things very easy for consumers, from what ive seen and some friends that have had them before....

May I suggest... Sony Viao, that's the same computer that astronauts use to do their taxes.

Why would someone who's downloading music and burning discs need something that's really good at doing your taxes on? I think it's safe to say that iTunes is probably the most easily navigatable music, movie, tv show and book downloading / playing program out there. I've only used a few others that were for PC's and found them clunky and over designed. (Why do programs for PC's hide the poor design factor with the option of "cool" skins?) And Vista?... jimminy cricket... that is such a blatant rip-off of a Mac OS. Microsoft might as well have stated on the box that they have finally given in to the demand for not only an OS that works for the user but also looks decent.

Any computer is good for doing your taxes. Any computer is good for surfing the internet. Any computer is good for downloading music and burning discs.

It's what pleases you personally that is going to sell you on a computer. At least that's how I see it. If you put a Dell and an Mac next to each other and told me they both did the same thing except one ran Vista and the other ran OS X... I'd go with the OS X.

YALL... thanks for the response. Interesting to hear from someone who actually works in the industry and sees it first hand.

Although I'm a little taken back by the lack of responses from other people who talked trash on Apple. Can't say I didn't expect it but at the same time I felt what could they really say. Every Apple basher I've ever come into contact with ceases bashing as soon as you ask them to tell you why a PC is better. They can't.

Because it comes down to the individual and their preferences.

Joker, i have only three reasons why i prefer my pc myself.

1. it's cheaper for the same amount of power/capability/reliability

2. It's easier to find a piece of software for just about ANYTHING you'd like to do, find it free

and find it fast.

3. There's no Autocad for mac.

Having said that, not once in my life have i doubted that macs, look better and are much easier, leave alone that their whole approach to things is much more respected in my book.
