everyone knows it's superman. it doesn't make sense to compare the two.

the reason why superman isn't as popular as batman or spider-man is because they made him too powerful. it's not even an interesting fight if bullets bounce off of him and he can incinerate people with laser beams and walk through fire. he's outdated.

Um, did any of you read The Dark Knight? The Batman is far superior to Superman for the specific reason that he IS mortal. His intellect and determination sets him apart form the human race. You could say The Batman's super power is his will, and mind.

As far as who would win, it depends. A spontaneous slug match? Superman. Without a doubt.

A premeditated battle? I'd put money on The Batman for the specific reason that Superman relies entirely too much on his inheirant strength, and other powers. He doesn't think the same way as The Batman. He isn't ruthless in the same way. The Batman will have 60 back up plans, 400 diversions, 76 fients, and probably some other crazy shit.

Also, for the uneducated....The Batman was kicked out of the Justice League because they found that in his safe, had a way to kill every one of them based off of their weaknesses. His defense was "what if one of you goes bad and we gotta take you out?" Superman doesn't think like that

It depends. Any one can beat anyone on a given day with circumstances in his favor.

i appreaciate KOH's look at it, though i disagree.

as was said superman was written as far too strong a hero--he is capable of invincibility. ultimately all he needs is a lead suit 1/4" thick to reach that status. batman however is a mortal reliant entirely upon technology. the best weapons yet created in the comic book universe (esp. DC universe) are not grand enough to destroy superman or to exploit his weakness.

as far as who's a better character w/ a stronger run of writers, artists, and in general a better "idea." that goes to batman. hands down.

so the initial question: who would win in a fight. superman. but who cares, because he's a poor creation. heroes are made heroes by overcoming their weaknesses or flaws (hubris). in the case of batman there are plenty. superman? he's overcome nothing (one could perhaps argue that being an immortal on earth would be a bit of a challenge socially i suppose...). superman is simply too good to be amusing.

As a counter point to "The GOON", The Batman doesn't nessesarily rely on technology. Thats where he excelles. He relies on his mind. Oh so Supermen needs a 1/4 inch thick lead suit. The Batman would find something to tear open the suit and then put inKryptonite, which we know he actually has.

In reality the one thing they have in common is that niether of them believe in killing people.

The Main difference, i will say it again is the make up of who they are as people. Superman tends to be honest and fair. He tends to fight fair. He is a tremendous opponent, but he doesn't have the capacity to think in ruthless terms. The Batman needs to achieve his objective at anycost, save killing the person, and that alone gives him an advantage, and its precisely that quality that makes him a more interesting hero.
