Police: Saturday Night Fracas Was a Lot of Hyphy

Got plans to be dumb and act stupid? Modesto's police chief says you'll have to do it someplace else because his department will no longer approve permits for high school dances at clubs in downtown Modesto.

Chief Roy Wasden on Wednesday said that decision was made in the wake of a party on Saturday night that turned into a melee. Wasden blamed a phenomenon called "hyphy" for the fracas. It's a mentality he characterized as "be dumb and act stupid."

Hyphy originated in the East Bay area. According to urbandictionary.com, hyphy may have originated from the word "hyperactive" and its meaning can range from dangerous and irrational to goofy. Police say it is also connected to "sideshows," in which big groups take over parking lots and party with their cars.

On Saturday night, police arrested 17 people when the large crowd that had gathered on 10th Street became unruly. Police believe many in the crowd had attended a "Back to School" party at the Velocity venue in the Palladium club on 10th Street, which Wasden said had been promoted on MySpace as a "hyphy" event. However, club owner Rudy Baca told News10 that Velocity only holds 300 people and he turned away about 80. He said many in the crowd could have come from other nearby clubs and movie theaters.
