Deaf-mute crime ring busted in Shanghai

SHANGHAI (AFP) - Chinese police have busted a gang of deaf-mute thieves in Shanghai that was run out of a prison hundreds of kilometres (miles) away, a state press report said.

The outfit was allegedly run by Wang Weidong, 40, a deaf man serving a life sentence for manslaughter in the southeastern province of Jiangxi, about 800 kilometres (500 miles) from Shanghai, the Shanghai Daily website said.

Police arrested the group of 13 members after a six month spree of stealing on Shanghai public buses.

Wang sent orders to his subordinates by communicating in sign language during prison visiting hours, the report said. It did not say how police caught the band.

Police found 100,000 yuan (12,500 dollars) stashed in a bank account in a Jiangxi.

"The deaf and mute pilferers' ring followed a strict discipline of their own," police officer Dai Min was quoted as saying in the report.

"The members submitted all the valuables and cash they stole every day to their leaders ... members would receive their income at the end of the year," said police.

Police were not immediately available for comment.

Ah! Even better than the mime farts question I posed in another thread... consider a vanfull of deaf-mutes one of whom has gas. or BETTER, a device that just squirts out fart smell every so often so that none of them actually farts but everyone suspects everyone else, truly the building blocks of drama!
