In blooper-type footage from a Zarqawi video released last week, the al Qaeda in Iraq leader is seen fumbling with a machine gun. U.S. Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch said the video was found during a series of raids in April on purported terror cell safe houses southwest of Baghdad. Lynch said Zarqawi decided not to publicize the piece, which shows him decked out in New Balance sneakers. In it, he said, Zarqawi had trouble firing his automatic weapon and needed assistance from an aide, and his associates "do things like grab the hot barrel of the machine gun and burn themselves." In the version that appeared on the Internet last week, Zarqawi swore allegiance to Osama bin Laden and said any government formed in Iraq would be just a "stooge." KaBar2 Posted May 5, 2006 Share Posted May 5, 2006 No, it doesn't jam. It runs like a house afire. The M249 Minimi is pretty bad ass, but it takes a little know-how. It's a basic infantry weapon in the Marine Corps, and probably the Army too. There is one M249 SAW for every four Marines. It is the weapon the Fire Team automatic rifleman carries. It's a 5.56mm caliber, gas-operated, air-cooled, full-automatic, shoulder-fired weapon. It uses a 200-round ammunition belt contained in a detachable magazine box and can also fire M16 magazines if the SAW gunner runs out of linked ammunition. Maximum rate of fire is 1,000 rounds a minute, but sustained fire is 85 rounds/minute. Rapid fire is 100 rounds/minute. To load the M249, attach a 200-round ammunition box to the dovetail slot under the receiver. Locate the green tab on the linked 5.56mm ammunition belt, pull up on it, and the ammo belt will be pulled up from the folded linked ammo belt in the box. Open the feed tray cover assembly on top of the receiver, place the ammunition belt on the feed tray from the left side of the feed tray assembly. Make sure the ammo belt links' open side faces DOWNWARD. Place the first round of the linked belt ammunition against the cartridge stop on top of the feed tray. The green tab should be to the RIGHT of the cartridge stop. Hold the tab in place, shut the feed tray cover. If he bolt is forward, in "battery", pull the charging handle to the rear, cocking the piece, then push the charging handle back forward until you hear it "click." (The click means it is safely locked forward.) Check the cartridge indicator (on top of the feed tray) to ensure that it is in the "up" position indicating that the ammunition belt is loaded properly. Push the safety to the RIGHT, placing the weapon on SAFE. To fire the M249, push the safety to the LEFT (red ring visable) to place the M249 on FIRE. Pull the trigger. Rat-a-tat-tat. Pretty simple. Obvious Posted May 5, 2006 Share Posted May 5, 2006 "it makes ya wonder." but yeah fuck zarqawi. he has nearly escaped capture numerous times. the funny thing is, a lot of the iraqi insurgents are at odds with "al qaeda in iraq" due to their differing goals -- the homegrown insurgents are resisting because they want their old baathist/sunni government back. al qaeda in iraq are mostly foreign muslim whom just want to destabilize iraq and create a civil war, including killing iraqis and blowing up mosques -- whatever it takes. People who opposed the invasion of Iraq to start with frequently say stuff like "It's been two years and we still don't have clean water, flush toilets or electricity 24/7 in Iraq. The Americans are incompetent!" Well, DUH, it's kind of hard to keep the power on when "al-Quaeda in Iraq" keeps murdering the generating statrion workers and blowing up the power lines. "Little babies are dying in Iraq because the Americans can't do anything right." Well, if Zarqawi and his murderers would stop destroying every single attempt to get Iraq back on it's feet, the hospitals and clinics and police agencies and schools, and government offices could go back to doing their jobs properly. In fact, if all the bombers, killers, kidnappers, lynch mobs and antisocial fuckheads in Iraq would stop killing each other and thousands of innocent Iraqi bystanders, maybe Iraq could become a normal, more-or-less deomocratic style republic. Wouldn't that be nice? "If we all just lit one little candle in the darkness . . . ." But, alas, that isn't too likely to happen. What's a great deal more likely to occur in Iraq is a fascist dictatorship, because people who refuse to obey the law cannot foster a democratic republic, and wind up midwifing authoritarianism. Obvious Posted May 8, 2006 Share Posted May 8, 2006 yeah you're right, the funny thing about U.S. "spreading" democracy, is that it wants to "install" democratic governments -- which contradicts democracy altogether. like you said, democratic governments should be formed as the wish of the people, not by outside forces. democracy isn't always the in the u.s.' best interests -- sometimes it's monarchist/dictatorial middle east regimes that the U.S. prefers: the united states has a mutual alliance with non-democratic regimes like Saudi Arabia, which many Muslims see as being oppressive and un-islamic. but it serves the u.s's interests. but in iraq, the u.s. became worried when realizing that the Iraqi people are trying to establish an islamic government -- which was won by popular vote through a democratic process.
