Three men have been charged with vandalising rail property after a video of their actions was allegedly posted on YouTube.

A 20-year-old and two 18-year-olds were arrested following early morning raids at Berkley, Dapto and Albion Park.

Police from the the Rail Vandalism Task Force seized computers, computer disks, clothing, photographs and street and Rail Corp signs during the raids.

Chief Inspector Chris Keen from the City Central Commuter Crime Unit told smh.com.au that investigators were able to identify the suspects after viewing a video on YouTube.

He said their faces were pixilated but other items shown in the clip matched evidence that was available to police.

"[YouTube] was how we came to be able to get sufficient evidence to prosecute them," he said.

A police statement said: "All three men have been charged with possess thing [spray paint] with intent to damage, enter and remain on running rail lines and two counts of malicious damage."

The trio have been granted conditional bail and are due to face Port Kembla Local Court on February 27.

The Rail Vandalism Task Force has made 194 arrests and laid 531 charges since it was formed in May, 2006.

The Minister for Transport and Police, John Watkins, said cleaning up graffiti on the NSW rail network costs around $15 million each year.

"Rail graffiti and other vandalism isn't art - it's a crime - and a costly one," Mr Watkins said.

"Malicious damage has a direct impact on reliability, safety and comfort for our train travellers."
