Sometimes, you really are better off just getting arrested.

A man who evaded police by jumping into the South Side's "Bubbly Creek" died less than 2 hours later, reports the Sun-Times.

At about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, police received a call reporting three people defacing some property immediately adjacent to the notorious waters.

When officers arrived on the scene, they were able to take two of the three alleged spray-painters into custody, Chicago Police spokesman Dan O'Brien told the Daily Herald.

However, officials say the third offender—a man in his early 20s—fled the scene and jumped into the area of the Chicago River known as "Bubbly Creek."

Decades ago, the city's Union Stock Yards used the river to dump slaughterhouse waste, which included blood and animal organs. The decomposing waste would cause the polluted water to bubble, giving the area its name.

Today, the waters meet the Illinois EPA standards ... but just barely.

Various sources say the man was in the water for 30 to 60 minutes before he could be rescued by the Chicago Police Marine Unit.

He arrived at John H Stroger Jr Hospital in critical condition, according to the Sun-Times, but was later pronounced dead at 8:16 p.m.
