Miami ink or Inked??

I have watched both.

I prefer Miami Ink, Garver's artwork makes that show.

Inked is amusing especially considering I've met a few of the guys and working as tattoo artists in a bling bling casino environment has given them some swollen heads. There is probably 3/6 artists working at H&H that I would get work by.

I'm glad that Thomas has left the show, he annoyed me and what was with his ugly throat tattoo?

I'm not to keen on the back stories but I guess that's the angle of what the show is.

Someone tell me about Garver. I've watched the show a couple of times and one of the guys said he is one of the top 5 tattoo artists in the world and while his work is nice, I haven't seen anything that would make me say he's one of the top 5. What is it about him that has him situated at that level?

Garver is the owner of True Tattoo in Hollywood, California. He has been tattooing for 16 years. He spent a lot of time in Japan being taught to do traditonal japanese work as opposed to the abundance of americans trying to interpret japanese artwork. His resume of the people that have guided him and taught him is incredible-he is a very diverse artist and can pull off almost any style.

Personally, putting him as the top 5 artist in the world is pushing it.

I would put Steve Moore up there before Garver.

Tough Love-

The artists on Miami Ink are Chris Garver, Kat VonD(guest sitting), Ami James(shaved head), Chris Nuñez, Darren Brass, Yojiro 'Yoji' Harada(casted to be the apprentice).

That's the kind of stuff I've wanted to get for a while. Geezpot, know of anyone in the LA area less famous (read: cheaper, less wait) with a similar background?

mack-I'll get back to you. I don't know too many people that have had formal training in asian design that work in LA besides Garver but I'll ask around. Lots of people can pull off a decent koi fish, dragon, etc. but I guess when going to asia/pacific rim the artists there know the difference between american dragons and authentic asian dragons.

ToughLove-I don't think Garver was a writer but I know Darren was a writer-don't know what he went by. Anyone in the Miami area might know?

darren and chris (nunez) both claim to be, but never mention what. there's always a bunch of [the same] wack handstyles in the background when they interview people, so i'm assuming it's them.

mackfatsoe,

anyone who's really that 'trained' in those styles will be more than you're looking to spend i'd bet. there are plenty of people talented enough to pull off the designs though. the 'important' part is the history, not necessarily the technique. do enough research and you'll be fine.

seeking/not trying to step on geezpots toes, just saying.

Man every tattoo artist that I've met that knows I write graffiti always have some bullshit story about being a dope writer,if I don't know your graffiti name then you never fucking ment shit as a writer.......if I see one more shitty graffiti tattoo I'm going to kill the person wearing it.

Alot of dudes have bad handstyles as they're cards, just ask a nigguh to bang out a real hand for you stop handing out those shits!

FUCK!

Seek-No toes stepped on. Basically you said it, if you want true authentic Japanese tattoo work iun LA you'll have to pay more. Option is to go to Japan and get some real deal shit.

Also I believe that Darren was a writer in Connecticut before moving to Miami.

"darren specializes in lettering because of his graffiti background"- ami

haven't been able to get a good look, but i saw a

little snippet of a show where ihe was coloring a piece in a blackbook

and then they flashed up a wall with the same color scheme

right before the commercial break.

who knows? he might not be a writer. coulda be coincidence.

i just took it as meaning he painted that piece.

he does write it says it on an episode, and ami mentions that he has that background, now every one is trying to find out what he writes........

if darren is still active its goin to be kinda hard to find out what he writes.

no inked is still on, however both are whack because they make tattooing so goddamn safe now. i used to like it when i would walk around with my tattoos and people would try to stay away from me, instead of coming up to me and asking me what they are, what they mean, did it hurt, how much did it cost, blah blah blah

exact same thing happened with that OCC show and motorcycles, i hate it.

i hate to break it to you james dean, but tattoos did not just became 'accepted' because of two obscure shows on two cable channels that have both run less than a dozen episodes. i know it sucks that nobody gives a shit about you anymore, and that you'll need to begin offering up more than an ounce of shock value in order to get noticed (so you can complain about the attention), but those of us who got tattoos because we wanted them for us, not for others, are kinda stoked that we're slowly coming off the instant-suspect list and can get decent jobs.

personally, i don't mind at all. if it makes people a little more open minded, i'm all for it.
