Alright, basically I'm in a shit college paying as little as possible until I figure out what I want to do...and then transfer. I've been looking at interior design lately because well...you know that kid that goes over to a new house and looks at how nice the bathroom tiles are? (pretend like you do) That's me. Creating a room, whether by drawing the plans, doing the lighting, picking the furniture and so forth have always interested me to some degree. (I'm heterosexual...really...okay well there was that one time...everyone experiments in college right?)

This is where you come in (not the gay sex part). I'm doing research on it now, figuring out where and what et cetera. And also I'm not sure which part I'm interested in. Do I want to go into conceptual architecture also...but just in case any of you have been there or are there, I pose these questions...

Are any of you currently enrolled in an art school? Does this art school have a good Int.design department? Are you interested in Int.design? Are you a pioneer for straight men in Int.design? Do you know someone who is? Does it suck?

This could be a phase and I could end up sucking dick for crack...but I'd like it not to come to that.

I'm no longer enrolled in art school. It's been many, many years. I was attending the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, then I went to the one in Pittsburgh. For graphic design. Though I do know they have an interior design course. Why am I mentioning it? Because I don't want you to go there. Ever. It's the worst school you could waste your money and time at. Does Cal Arts have an interior design course? I'd look out west.

I personally am very interested in interiors. (Also not gay) It's kind of part of my job. Buying furniture and such for work has sparked an interest. From contemporary (Elle Decor) to modern (Echoes)... I dig it. I'm not sure what the draw is but it's there. I really like when the architect who either designed the room or the house also designs the furniture to go with the house. I think that's very cool.

I'm more in to modern. Mid-century modern. Eames and the like. The King of Hell or Beardo can back me up on this. I own several nice pieces but putting it all together in a cookie cutter apartment has been a hue struggle. It just doesn't look right. So I've given up and have decided to let things sit where they may till we move to something more accommidating.

What's your style? What designers do you like?

tease.. start working on your portfolio. just come up with a ton of scripts for as many different products/services/etc. as you can. then send them to advertising agencies, theyre always looking.

why is it so hard to take your own advice?

Personally I think NEST is a hit or miss magazine when it comes to content. There's no doubt that they push the limits of what a magazine should be and look like. Though I question some of the houses they feature. Especially when it comes to the price of the magazine. Don't get me wrong. It's a great magazine. Just not one that I would purchase on a monthly basis. It's kind of like BIG magazine in that it is sometimes really good and sometimes not.

For interiors I usually check out Echoes, Abitare, Residences (french), Dwell, Wallpaper* and sometimes european versions of magazines like Elle Decor have some great stuff.

I just found out that the architechture firm my wife works for (she's an accountant though... damn!) has been selected to work with Frank Ghery on a retirement center. Should be pretty cool.

Its perfectly normal for writers to expand their design skills into whatever they're in to.I would never expect that the house of a writer would lack style.

The thing is Pilau, that if you're interested into studying something,to be a 'pro' that is,i would say that you should take architecture.

I like interior design but on an amateur level, for a simple reason such as make the place i live nice, but if i was a 'pro' i would have the desire to control the whole thing.External and internal. Its like if i just drew i wouldnt have a problem to color a writers sketch with a dope color combo. But as a writer i want to draw the sketch and color it.

Its more complete that way,

Take architecture,think big.

jokalicious, i agree that its largely hit or miss, but shit, i'll spend the 12 bucks just for the packaging. and at only 4 issues a year, i can deal with it.

i cant believe your into wallpaper... its good, but its just sort of... i dont know... it just seems like the 'while you were sleeping' of the interior design world... some good stuff, but alot of flash in the pan nonsense.

you checked out TANK? its not interior design, but it features some... more than anything i guess its just odd photos and what not, but thats another big winner for me. dutch is another decent one. a little more fashion, than either of the two, but if your gonna go art fag, might as well go all the way...

...i saw the ghery exhibit at the MoMa this summer...the exihibit was extremely indepth, almost to a fault, but was an incredible and exhilarating look at architecture(from a layman's stance)...what interested me most was his philosophical approach to design, and people and the inter-relationship of the two...the man has an interesting view of line and space...r.

Tesseract, that's actually a point I've been mulling over. The only thing is I've always been horrible at math. That's why I was thinking of conceptual architecture along the lines of Maya Lin. Although even she, who does a lot of conceptual stuff, has a degree in architecture for the basics i suppose.

I've never been to confident in my ability to see things like this through. I have a thousand huge projects that I've started...and if I didn't get as far along as quickly as I wanted, I lost interest.

Seeking...

Yeah, Wallpaper* is a bit of the "hipster" rag but there's something about the simplistic design behind the magazine that I'm attracted to. Even the content doesn't bother me so much when you consider the background imagery behind the disgustingly skinny woman posing in what seems to be a t-shirt selling for $900. They do keep an eye on design. In architecture and interior. And that's what appeals to me about their magazine.

Tank is definitely a cool one. I like how it's unpredictable. Everything about it is unpredictable. You just have no idea what the next issue will be. From size to content. Very innovative that way. And Dutch just has some pretty cool pictures to gawk over.

Have you ever checked out Black & White? Very cool images and very cool design and layout. I highly reccommend a gander. It's a photo magazine so no interiors aloud.

I picked up the new Architectual Record today. There's a nice big article about the World Trade Center buildings in there. As well as the new Bank by Frank Ghery. Which is really cool.

Pilau i dont want to sound like MaryfuckinPoppins here but really...if you suck at math but at the same time the idea of architecture sounds good,

Give it a shot. You dont have to be a math genius you just have to go through basic stuff.

Overcome your self.Everyone must eventually...or should i say Transcend?:king:

i have seen black&white, although not in a couple months... a problem i have with alot of these 'art' magazines, is that they seem completely formulaic. pick a random name, take close up pictures of something thats broken, throw in a layout of ugly people that border on pornographic and then bind it all up in an odd dimension, sell it for ten bucks and your an art magazine. of course there are some (like tank) that have just that, but still manage to keep it fresh, but i dont know... they are the exceptions. i guess what im getting at is that ive finally realized that the art world is as bullshit as the music industry. yeah i know, i just realized this...

i need to find some of those other magazines you mentioned... tower? i know the borders near me doesnt have them....

I'm studying landscape architecture. Not the rednecks that drive pickup trucks and mow your lawn, its design on the land. We do golf courses, parks (think central park), urban planning, all kinds of stuff. Anyways, its a design field, something else to think about. You get to have an impact on the environment too.

okay...question here...

is it just me..or does anyone else look at magazines like wallpaper, and some other such pretensious art and design magazines...and feel, I dunno...like..they just "can't hang"?..okay, sorry for the lack of eloquence here, what I mean is, I feel like the prince and the pauper or something looking at magazines like that...the world they depict..the money..the social aspects..the lifestyle..it just seems out of reach. (and don't get me started on the overall preference of photography over illustration.....that's another topic right there)

and speaking of "prince and the pauper", then there's art school...

I actually had the fortune of having a friend take me to check out the art center in pasadena a few years back...and I was so intimidated. the money there..jeez..every other car in the parking lot was a lexus or somesuch nice new car. when I was inside I swear to god I kept thinking someone was gonna ask me what I was doing and forcibly escort me out of the place. it was so expensive and felt so exclusive...(and the best single word I can think of to describe the students: decadent...)

I didn't know what to think. I certainly could never ever afford something like that. and full merit scholarships seem to be few and far between.. and I'm not down to attempt to take out loans and put my grandchildren in debt ..haha..I'm sure going to a place like that is a surefire pathway to success and fortune, but damnit....I feel like I don't belong..or wouldn't be allowed to belong..

arrggh..it's just really frustrating..like there's this "in crowd" you have to become a part of in order to make it in the art world.

well now I'm rambling...but I'd be curious to know if anyone else shares my sentiments.

alright..back to my minumum wage job...

I feel you Mr lonely,

The thing is that 'art' magazines always make me hate art eventually.

Although while looking at them i see interesting stuff that intrigue me to create and think the whole sense of segmentallity(sp?) really bothers me.

Sometimes its the only way to discover new things/artists/ideas but i came down to the conclusion that magazines are made for people interested in art (like buying, talking about).

Some are better than others and thats a matter of context but still the credit goes to the artist in the end.

I enjoy 10 times more a technical mag about fishing with valuable info on how to fish...;)

Guess that thats why this board is better than any 12ozmagazine although 12oz is the best magazine
