Look at emceeing like playing the guitar: It's easy to sound like you know what you're doing when you're pulling on a $5000 electric that's plugged into a $1000 amp that's stocked with distortion, chorus and reverb than it is to belt out something decent on an acoustic because you have way less to hide behind, and that's a fact. It's about doing the most with the least... not disguising it. Not that everyone who drops that 'weird shit' is just fishing for a nasty line, some know what they're doing to a T and make some ill music, but for the most part those types are hiding behind a thesaurus. I think if you listen aesop rock line for line says some ill shit like: "if your Jesus piece around your neck is bigger than your pistol, it makes homicide okey-dokey, and your God will forgive you. Just show the saints at Heaven's gate you should be on the list. 'I heard he overlooks manslaughter for a tattooed crucifix.'" But a lot of those kids who try to spit scientific or prophetic lines just sound dumb because they don't know what they're saying. It's like my middle eastern friend that has a word of the day calendar but has no idea of how to pronounce any of it so he spits it out however he sees fit. On a related note I was at this hall of fame once playing atmosphere and this gay dude obviously on drugs comes up to talk to us. He goes "This is white people rap right? I've heard it before it sounds a lot different than that other rap." He proceeded to call a pink piece "sensual" and ask my friend to run away with him... If urban is defined as "of, related to, or located in a city," then the classification of minorities as "urban" while perhaps not rhetorically satisfying, is technically accurate. That is, there is a higher proportion of minorities in urban areas versus suburban or rural areas. This is a product of the flight of former slaves to cities in search of work and the development of exclusively or almost exclusively African-American communities therein. This was also aided by the creation of immigrant areas in major cities, where the groups would stick together to be near their own and to provide cultural as well as economic stability to one another. Unfortunately when we refer to "urban" in the context of rap music or freestyling what we are actually referring to is people who are raised in centralized urban ghettos. These ghettos are the product of, again, the black movement to urban areas en masse following the abolition of slavery, the collection of low-skill low-wage jobs in inner cities and the development of former slave communities. Another aggravating factor was the "white flight" of affluent caucasians to suburban areas to avoid the crime and destitution which followed the development of low-wage impoverished communities within the inner cities, as well as the all out racist migration to avoid minority populations. Finally the development of "housing products" in the inner cities aggravated the problems of ghettoization as the populations were forced to exist separately from the more affluent surrounding areas. The white flight in these areas reached an extreme leaving no one but the poor minority worker with little or no wages. So the simple answer is yes, depending on our definition minority people make up the vast majority of the populations which we are referring to as "urban." While there are white people in these areas they are few and far between. The real question is should minorities be more urban than others? I think the answer to that is a resounding no.
