ok here, here's the real scoop:

it was interesting from the perspective that they went through boot camp, and all the other shit they feed you in the marines, like the yelling, the brother hood they develope and shit like that, but to make a long story short here is the movie:

sign up for marines, find a job in the marines, boot camp, lots of yelling, brother hood and friendship, we're finally going over seas to war thank god, get over there and walk around in dessert looking at absolute nothing, say hoorah a few times because the commercials said we would, marines get lost in dessert on a mission that wasnt even a mission, marines find themselves back at party camp site to discover the "war is over" and not one bullet was fired (in the direction of an enemy anyhow) movie ends.

fucking horrible idea for a movie.

i mean if you went there and did the war in real life, and now youre a older dude telling a youngster in the family, fine... live it up.

horrible idea for a "entertaining movie" though...

that shit shoulda went straight to a shitty documentary dvd series instead.

thats whats up.

You seem to be forgetting that the entire point of this movie was to show the futility of war. Being a marine is boring as fuck, you think that they are shooting people and doing gung ho crazy marine shit every second? No, 90% of the time you're digging toilets, reading porn mags, smoking weed, seeing who's dick is the biggest, and generally doing fuck all while you wait for something to go down. That's what it's like in modern war, and thus, that's the point of this movie.

I'm sorry your dumbass feels ripped off because you couldn't tell that it was not a "shoot the shit out of the Iraqis" type movie like everybody else could.

Go read the book first (if you've seen the film, read the shit anyway). The film is a horrific bastardization of the book (surprise). Anthony Swofford, the author, had absolutely NOTHING to do with the writing of the film. It's essentially an interpretation of his book without any input from him. The actors weren't even "allowed" to speak to the guy. But what's new? Books to films suck 99% of the time.

But the chances of the book being made into a film that follows it directly are slim to nil... the book is that rough. Plus, for all the proverbial 'haters' out there, Swofford's writing is more than readable. William Broyles Jr. (screenplay) couldn't write that to save his life. The whole first person POV is lost in the film. The stuff going on in these guys' heads gets scary as shit and heavily fucked up and Swofford is just putting it down on paper. I taught excerpts from this to a bunch of college seniors and there were girls straight crying in class the next day. Hoorah that.

In review:

book=good,

film=not so good but it could've been worse i guess but still the book is way better which is usually the case anyway so fuck a film that came from a book.

TO DEVILDANCE

hey your not the only marine on here bud.

I agree the film was pretty accurate.

for SF 1- why don't you grow a fucking spine and go see what its really like over there, you want to see people die? you think its a fucking video game?

I lost friends in Iraq, brothers, fucking guys i went through boot with, seeing people die isn't all that great when you were eating with em 20 minutes before.

and to the guy who said that his friend just plays playstation all day, theres probably some truth to that, hes probably at camp america, for guys who were in the 1st suicide Bat, its a little diff. I don't need to go into detail, but we didn't have it so easy.

and whoever said it was a propaghanda film is a fucking moron, the story is the memoir of a grunt who was over there in the first gulf war, he had no vested intrest in painting a picture of something that wasn't true.

Born to Die but never will

Semper Fi!
