Comedy Central star Dave Chappelle has checked himself into a mental health facility in South Africa, the magazine Entertainment Weekly reported on Wednesday.

"It isn't a case of him spending a weekend someplace recuperating from exhaustion," an EW editor says of Chappelle's problems.

Dave Chappelle, whose hit Comedy Central sketch show halted production last week, has checked himself into a mental health facility in South Africa, a source close to the comedian confirmed Thursday.

Chappelle is being treated for a psychological problem; his reps say he does not have a problem with drugs. The South Africa trip was first reported by Entertainment Weekly late Wednesday.

His sudden disappearance has halted production on the third season of Chappelle's Show, which was delayed from February to April to May 31 and now, indefinitely.

"We're still unable to confirm the facts surrounding Dave's disappearance," says Comedy Central spokesman Tony Fox. "We don't know where he is. We haven't talked to him." Chappelle's publicist, Matt Labov, declined comment.

Chappelle had shot a good amount of footage for the planned third season of his show. Though the network is hopeful Chappelle will return, producers are worried the season is in jeopardy.

Chappelle's behavior has become increasingly erratic. Friends and business associates say they haven't heard from him in weeks.

Chappelle, 31, experienced near-overnight success, signing a record-setting deal last August worth at least $35 million for two more seasons of his show. The figure includes projected DVD sales. The first season DVD was last year's best-selling TV title.

"Chappelle's Show is easily the best job I've ever had in this industry," he told USA TODAY last August.
