Im not from New York so forgive my ignorance, but is that tunnel still active? as in trains still run through there?

yes, the tunnel is still active. until 1984(?) it was a four track freight tunnel used to carry goods and products to the meat-packing district where the tracks went above ground so that the products could be directly unloaded into factories, etc (today this is known as the chelsea highline). then, in the mid 80's, two of the tunnel's 4 tracks (on the far left and far right) were removed (because of a decline in service) and the tunnel was eventually abandoned until 1991 when it was bought by amtrak. as youre all well aware, a large homeless population moved in during the late 80's, calling the tunnel home until 1995-1996 when amtrak decided to spiff up the tunnel for better service and business. today amtrak trains still run frequently through the tunnel (one about every hour or so).
