Ron English - Popaganda

This may have been done before, couldn't find it on search, though.

You may recognize his work from Supersize me and Apocalypse Culture II (well, probably not the latter). Ron English has been painting subversive, anti-corporate paintings for a while. He's even put in work at illegaly taking over billboards. Dig it.

Some body could, if they so chose - merge this with the other thread on him just titled English (Altho maybe not since the images here are superior anyway.) Back to what i was meaning to say, im not a big fan. While i admire his skill and do enjoy looking at his work theres something that i cant quite explain that keeps me on reserve as far as really being able to say anything positive about his painting's.

I cant really say what it is that bother's me, maybe im just over "pop art" in general - living in Los Angeles im bombarded with it on a regular basis and even though Ron's work is more or less mocking that partic. style - adapting it to lash out and poke fun at the corporations who spawned it, the majority of his body of work just doesnt do it for me.

(Tho fire in (a,the) fishbowl as well the marilyn series def. get a thumbs up.)

...i think some of english's work is pretty smart, and that stuff i can enjoy...but some of it just comes off wrong to me and i can't get into it...

..as far as the billboards...well...they're funny, but that's it...they're not smart, they're not art, and most people that see them probably don't even notice them...or even if they read them they don't make any difference...we're bombarted by so many damn images and billboards as it is that a couple of 'subversive' ones don't mean any thing more than the really clever ones that the professional ad execs come up with...
