Hobos, Tramps and Homeless Bums

As some of you may know, a squat in new orleans burned to the ground a few nights ago, killing 8 people and two dogs. My road dog nikki was one of them, a guy named sammy i knew only slightly, and a dude going by john or "carwash" Some of the other victims have been id'd since then.

dude i know that guy. he drives a jeep and tried to blow his face off when he was 16.. he used to come into the head shop where the homie works all the time. tucson is a crazy place.

A bunch of my crew just got a ride down to colton to hop out to new orleans.... Heard a bunch of kids burned up in a warehouse fire down there some friends of friends were involved...

Anyone have info on the current status of the Feather River Route? I've heard that it's been shut down, I've heard that it's still running, small sections have been abandoned, there's a new route through Donner Pass or something or other. Nothing solid! Anyone ridden it recently? Any Cali heads with info? Feel free to pm - and thanks!

Last year the tunnels over donner pass got notched out, so all the doublestack traffic that was using feather river is now going straight over sparks-roseville. it hasn't been shut down, just downgraded. Junk is still running that route, much more infrequently, but you'd be hard pressed to find any hotshots going that way anymore.

Hmm I see. Would be interesting to find out about the timetables for the junk that still runs through there. I am thinking about heading out there this summer to ride or potentially rail-bike (working on building one right now) in that area. Something like that of course would be contingent on the frequency of traffic going through the area and/or finding corridors that are no longer in use.

The one I'm working on will be something like the first one you posted there (the tandem) with a center platform for storing gear and supplies. Building it however will probably be the easy part. Figuring out time tables/schedules for areas I'd like to travel is another thing entirely... also it will be important that the apparatus can be quickly and easily moved on and off the rail. Also plan on making the bikes themselves removable from the rail sled.

 

If junk only runs through the feather river canyon now I'm guessing traffic tends to be lighter on weekends? Doesn't seem to be alot of info on this in the latest ccg.. Is most of that area single track? It will probably be worth riding that line a time or two before attempting any rail biking on it..

just as I imagined.....the first appears to probably be the fastest/lightest...but no ability to remove bikes from rig to travel otherwise..

 

the second seems to have the right idea but looks like it could come off track.

 

the third is badass... but probably heavy as fuck and it wont really be that easy to store either..

 

whats the rules on riding one of these shits on the rails? it seems like a no-go all the way around. how much ground can you cover on this?

is this something people have done across country,or just local stuff?

It's pretty illegal and dangerous if you don't know what you're doing, where you're going, when you should go, how you should go etc. Trespassing on rr property, reckless endangerment, that sort of thing. Not all that different from hopping trains!

 

Pretty easy to do on stretches of abandoned rail and areas that have extremely low traffic from what I can gather, although it's not any less illegal. There are some lines around the country that private groups (rr museums, motorcar clubs, etc. ) have bought rights of way for areas of abandoned track and/or worked out an agreement with the rail co. so they can travel the lines legally. NARCOA does alot of shit like that. This however is gonna be a long term project with lots of research and recon before any attempts at doing the run are made. Currently drawing up plans for construction, then a prototype build and testing. Then heading out west, figuring shit out, and doing another build.

I was out scouting a spot to write and found a not very welcoming camp of people living under a giant overpass. I'm assuming that they've been there for a while and that they don't appreciate others making their spot any hotter. Don't blame em though. Sucks because the spot I wanted to hit was perfect.

I've heard of that guy in Tucson without much of a face left, crazy story.

Hobos live by anonimity. the less people know of them the better. graphiti artists draw too much attention to their camp and/or catch out spot

Flatcar, think about that statement or a minute. These homeguards are CAMPED OUT under an overpass, but a graff writer hitting the underpass is going to heat up the spot? I doubt that Blameworth could make it any hotter than a bunch of homeguards already have.

 

We have a big problem with local jungle buzzards sleeping at the hooch at Eureka and leaving their garbage everywhere. They can't be bothered to burn their trash. Scumbags.
