Polaroid files for bankruptcy

Polaroid cameras can develop photos in 10 seconds

Polaroid, which made cameras that developed photos on the spot, has filed for bankruptcy.

The US firm has been struggling under a debt mountain for some months, and the announcement had been widely rumoured.

Three months ago, Polaroid said it was exploring strategic options including a sale of the company, but no buyer emerged.

And market conditions have become bleaker following the 11 September terrorist attacks, forcing Polaroid to admit defeat.

A bankruptcy court judge has approved $13.1 million in emergency funds so the company can meet its payroll and pay outstanding checks.

Fading popularity

The company's popularity was etched away after the introduction of one-hour film developing shops and video cameras.

And the firm struggled to adapt to new digital technology as its core instant film business faded.

Polaroid's financial difficulties began well before 11 September.

But a slowdown in travel - and the purchase of cameras and films - could have been the nail in the coffin of the company.

Broken into pieces

The company was founded by Harvard University dropout Edwin Land in 1937.

Total debts at the firm amount to almost one billion dollars.

Polaroid shares, which traded as high as $60 in 1997, were frozen on the New York Stock Exchange at just 28 cents last Tuesday.

In the second quarter of this year, the firm posted an operating loss of $52m.

It was due to report third quarter results next week.

Analysts say the company is now most likely to be stripped for its parts.

The firm has already received a $33 million offer for its identification business, which makes licenses for state motor vehicle bureaus.

I KNOW! I just read that same article! That's quite unfortunate. I love polaroids (actually I was just thinking about buying one yesterday, just because).

I guess I'll have to get a quality digital camera for getting uhh those "pictures of my girlfriend" from now on. Will polaroid still have film for sale at least, or another company to take over film production. FUCK everything I ever buy goes out of biz. Got a Dreamcast , Got a TurboGrafx back in the day, and now Polaroid.

I feel you on that one pistol, I guess we can invest in digital encrypted photos. I think we should be able to get the film for a while longer, so stock up....:king:

you could always learn to devolop your own film for those questionable photos. I wish they'd have a big discontinued sale. I'd buy a ton of film.

Oh shit Boogie. I was cracking up after reading that story. I can only imagine what it was like to see your friends mom later. :eek:Or how that kid felt everytime he looked at his mom or you came back over. Needless to say that was probably the last time he invited you to look for porn mags in "his" house.

ah. No. That would have been the beauty of polaroids. A darkroom is fairly simple to set up though. And the general process is fairly simple as well. I'm not sure what you'd do about an enlarger though. Anybody here in Photography? I need to get ahold of some liquid light and have some real fun. I just need the money for it.

Fuck that!!!

Polaroids is pure fucking magic!

Its not the developing thing only...its the best way to photograph something without any settings that would make the picture look "art".Many artists worked for/with polaroid

Chuck Close is one of them.As far as i am concerned Polaroid is the NASA of the Arts.

It also has a lot of tricks...did you knew that you can transfer the image on paper and look like a watercolor?

Really i have been stocking up, go to Ebay and but 100 shots for 10 bucks...even the experation date on the film is sometime in 1996 it still comes out great. Every so often a picture comes out runny but you can play that off as uh artistic intent? Polaroid transfers are great.
