slug is cool. real cool...but far from the best. as someone said buck65 is nice and underrated and blahblahblah...this is a pretty limited scope here. micranots are cool and un-loved. jedi mind tricks are another facet....and unloved by most.grouch is incredible. eligh, murs, etc.

sixtoo. i guess dose is innovative, but im not into it...as he would say "its not bad rap/i just dont feel it..." canox is great...lif is bangin.eyedea is fat. 7l and esoterradactyl are nice.

lil wayne is hot!!! irony is also a pretty fat quality in music...some of you take hiphop too seriously. and considering its basically rhyming, thats a stupid thing to do. lil wayne is live as shit. that SHINE track gets bumped in my ride everymorning on the way thru north philly to school....check my baby momma....word.

my real favorites of hiphop (underground or otherwise) are this:

late80s: PE, PE, PE, PE, PE. krs, rakim, nwa, g rap&polo, kane, ll, PE.

early 90s: PE, ice cube, brand nubian, lons, tribe, cypress (dont front!!you did too), 3rd bass, main source, mc eiht, special ed, etc...

92-95: nas (one album only), wutang, roots, organized konfusion, diamond d, big l (lifestylez....got me thru highschool...), showbiz and ag, brand nubian, tribe, dre, biggie, g rap, mop, gang starr, jeru, masta ase, grouphome, peterock and cl smooth, akineyle, largepro, kurious, stimulated dummies, casual, del, heiro, saafir, Freestylefellowship, outkast, common sense (soul by the pund...), jayz (the speedy flow days...), gravediggaz, krs, mobb deep, snoop, tragedy, black moon, smif n wessun, heltah by 96, nyc mixtapes....

96-99: "the advent of player hating/backpacking/and 'underground'" as i like to recall....beginning with the cenobites on fondele em i guess...just when the interent started blowing up....but COFLOW was definitely the flagship act of indie hiphop. i was more into natural elements (lswift, abutta....banging), natural resources, arsonists (older stuff), jugganots, lfudge, pumpkin head, jlive (BANGING), pre-fame EMINEM, believe it or not, was great...."went to bed wit a keg/woke up wit a 40"...lol), motion man, aceyalone, rasco, asia, peace, abrude, thristen howl III, skam, shabaam sahdeeq (so, so underrated....one of my faves.), tony bones, nonphixion crew, cage, necro, etc..., atoms family-pre can/ox, wordsworth, breeze evahflowin, punchline, saukrates, frankenstein, choclair, l*roneous, dilated peoples (ev is amazing), masta ase redux, nots click, siah and yeshua da po ed, etc..etc..etc.....im leaving out many im sure, and showing my eastcoast bias i guess...

99-present. while deep in my indie player hating days, i swore i would never listen to jiggy type rap ever again. i was content in the world of punk rock bicycle/graffiti-racking/internet/college/snobby/white/elitist/music culture. it was fun while it lasted. until one day, in early 1999, i was visiting my girl in rome, italy, and we went clubbing with a bunch of girls. and while we were in this basement type crazy italian club, im leaning up against the bar, nursing a rumandcoke, watching my girl and many others dance....cuz i dont danc eto bullshit, right? anyway, jayz's "money cash hoes" comes on...the EPITOME (in title even) of what i have sworn off forever....supreficial rap. and , to my surprise or horror, the place goes crazy. the simple piano sweep programming of a then unabused swizz beats tearing through the crowd. i watch my girl and many others dance like crazy, with smiles on their faces and the entire crowd just totally FEELING it...and i realized that this is what music is about, first and foremost. imagine putting on an anticon record in a club, fuck it , even a party....shit would come to a grinding halt. and thats not to say im completely dismissing cerebral music- just that it isnt ALL there is. so, in one moment in italy, jayz brought me back onto the dancefloor and cured me of my PHD (playerhating disease). now i mix my show and ag with my lil wayne with my sole with my jayz with my mop with my grouch with my nelly. yes nelly. its all good in the hood.

peace.

Man, for a moment there I thought you were a friend I hadn't met yet. I was agreeing with everything you said, and then you spoiled it all by saying you listen to Nelly.

But seriously man, when you go to a club and watch the girls going for it to all the jiggy shit, you gotta love it for what it is. No girls gonna shake her ass to the Dilated Peoples etc (well, no good looking ones).;)

Fuck, THE LAW doesn't even get down to the hippity hoppity sounds of today's youth...but he's still reading this anyway...

(1)THE LAW has said it before and he'll say it again, 20 years from now when Nelly's "ride with me" comes on the radio and your car is bumping like there's no tomorrow...y'all will try to act like you were down from the beginning. Just like all the music snobs in the 70's are trying to do now with The Ohio Players (FUNKY WORM!) or whoever.

IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE UNPOPULAR TO BE GOOD!

"i twist characters like twist characters..."

(2) THE LAW has never heard the song this quote is from or even whoever said it, but that shit wouldv'e come off a lot harder if he said:

"I twist crews like TWIST SCREWS"

anything by PE is cool i think. rakim has some dopeeeeeeeeee shit (big payback???i think thats him and eric b. or something, i just listen to the shit i dunno know names often...) NWA is fuckin awesome too.

hmm...other than that...cannibal ox, met them and aesop and atoms fam at some small show, super cool guys and shit, got both the canox and atoms shits and theyre real good. I dont like KRS much though, i dunno, theres only so many times you can listen to "out for fame..." that and i bought "i got next" and wasnt too psyched on it, whatever though. dilated peoples too, i like them alot too. I know alot of you dont consider them underground or whatever but i like Talib Kweli and Mos Def too, Talib more though i think, just shit i can ride my bike to.

DEAD FUCKIN PREZ, i like their shit alot too. um...heltah skeltah, and wutang also, but not the new wutang shit, only 36 chambers and wutang forever, triumph is a good song, and some of their solo things, like the Gza, are really good.

okay, sporadic enough i think...

nsk-vc

oh yeah, nelly sucks, not because hes not "underground" enough, just because..........he sucks.

eminem too, that guy can eat a dick (if he doesnt already...)

yeah nise i've had a similar epiphany while bumping bottle of humans at work a while back. i was fully digging it cuz i think the lyrics are thoughtful, my coworkers just couldn't get it. it went right over their head. right after the album was done someone popped in wutangs 36 chambers and suddenly all of us were fully rhyming along and jumping around in beat. i came to the same conclusion that i was too into thinking about and not just feeling music.

haha....nise will be filing his complaints in the 6th district promptly. relief sought wll include:

1. the returning of my goddam post

2. compensatory damages

i expect you wll file a timely answer with the clerk of courts within the time alotted pursuant to the FRCP (federal rules of civil procedure).

see you in court, the law.

sike, naw.....i agree, obviously, about nelly, but im embarassed that ive dedicated this much effort to the damn guy.

as for the twist line, its aesop rock, and i like his line a little better than your suggestion. only in the sense that his "double entendre" plays up the shift of word use..."I (verb)(OBJECT) like (possessive noun)(object)"....well, the grammar might not be the right terminology, but you (of all people!) get the picture. your suggestion is a little easier to get, but CREWS/SCREWS is kind of just a rhyme. twist characters (letters, words) and TWIST characters (screws) is more of a play on words for the initiated only...i like that it takes a little more effort to "get"...but thats me.

a similar hiphop/english one that i like is heltah skeltah (actually they have tons) :

from "the square"

"WE = MC SQUARED" theres 2 emcees in the group, the math isnt perfect, but the play on words is...pretty clever..

"RUCK and ROCK be the ROOKS/we hold the square down"

ruck, rock, rook, alliteration, ROOKS are the four corner pieces on a chess board, so they "hold it down"...play on words with "hold it down" in the hiphop sense....pretty clever...2 play on words in one line.

"Pirahna MCs be bitin/like larry you fish burn" (i dont know if i quoted that verbatim) but its kind a cool...ebonic use of term "biting" to equate others to pirahnas, then saying, "...you fish burn"/ as in larry FISHBOURNE...a little poetic license with the pornounciation, but not too far...most people pronounce fishbourne like FISH-BURN....pretty fat.

another comparable one for HS is "you get done away/like faye" as in faye dunaway.....i think this type of witty lyricism is really underrated appreciated in hiphop and largely unnoticed...im not talking about simple punchlines, but ones that include almost literary play on words....like the CHINO XL : "step into my cipher/and catch a L in a circle/like a fuckin lexus logo"....thats pretty fat and more creative than it seems a t first glance....maybe i should start a thread on this and see what else comes up....

peace...

98 cents short of a dollar....

I don't know how this thread made it on the list again..but since I'm here....

K-otix is dope,if you don't believe me ..check out the "Universal" lp..or the "7Mcs" single from a few years ago....that will tell you if you feel them or not.

El The Sensai-his solo shit is sick.sounds like old Artifacts but with no Tame One.

Mr. Brady-some Battle Axe shit,if you like that.

Busdriver.

A.O.M.-from Portland--"Authors of Madness"...chances are..that if you are not from P-Town or know someone there, you will never hear this...and that is tooo bad.--also known as "Army of Minds".

The Pacifics-Chicago.

Capital D-solo stuff(from the group All Natural)...the stuff he has by himself is ill....but than again,I like anything by All Nat.

One and One-I do not know what the hell happened to these guys, but in '96..I was feelin' 'em.

I-N-I-same as above.album was supposed to come out--but I never saw it.

Volume 10-hiphopera.classic.

Insight-from Boston..this guy is dope.

fuck it,I'm too tired to type anymore....have a good one.

i have to say one of the best verses i've heard any "underground" mc drop is pharoahe monch on releasing hypnotical gasses:

-------

As you look from whenceforth I come; riding the wind

thus eliminating competition from bird's-eye view, I'm

descending in helicopters -- in a village raid

Flesh will burn when exposed to the poetical germ grenade

I'm highly intoxicating your mind -- when I'm operating

on cell walls to membranes, cytoplasms to protoplasms

Disintegrate em eliminate em now no one has em in battle

I display a nuclear ray that'll, destroy bone marrow in cattle

Thereby destroying the entire food supply

that's crawling with AIDS, maggots, flies

It's ironic, when a demonic, government

utilizes bionics and a six million dollar man to capture me

Clever, however; you could never ever begin to apprehend a hologram

Who's determined to fight solely, to defend in wars a land of the holy

I threw I-raq/a-rock and I-ran/I-ran

cause I couldn't stand anymore within the depths of the sand

So don't ask me Hu-ssein/who-sane

cause the hypnotical gases are eating my brain

---------

current indie mcs i listen to is a short list:

kewli

mos def

sage franics (makeshift patroit is hot)

slug

can ox

i wish i still worked in a record store getting vinyl for free was like a dream come true.

people have a hard time comprehending how people can like pop and underground, 2pac and big, nas and jayz.

why does it have to be one or the other.

fuck.

sometimes i wanna hear some ace-rizzle and then i may be in the mood for some "we thuggin" or "lets get dirty"

and the best part?

couldnt give a fuck whether you understand or approve.
