Also, I think it had to do with the fact that these things were so goddamn heavy, to carry them properly on both shoulders(at the size we were at back then), you had to slouch forward like a hunchback with your arms hanging in front like an ape. It looked/felt stupid. Keeping it on one shoulder and leaning to the side to resting some weight on your hip felt a lot more natural. Now that we're bigger, we can manage the weight a lot better.
